I think what's happening is that fandom is finally catching on to what is really going on with Holmes tbh. He's an interesting character, but in his way just as "bad" as BBCSherlock. He's just sneakier, more "socially pleasant" about his violations, harassment and manipulations.

So I was scratching my head when everybody was going on about how supposedly non-problematic ElementaryHolmes was in comparison to the BBC version at the beginning...when I found their behaviour about equally terrible and found both of them "vulnerable" and "relatable". The conception of the characters is just different, there's an emphasis on different features of their personalities, so the "awfulness" expresses itself in different ways. But it's equally there for both.

I haven't actually seen more than the first episode of Elementary, and don't have that much of an opinion on that Sherlock Holmes; it was the way fandom talked about him that amused me.

I mean, they made him sound like the woobie fanon version of the versions I have seen or read (including the original). He's an awesome character because he lacks about half of Sherlock Holmes' original personality traits? Really? I was amused.

Yeah, I think it was a case of "seeing what you want to see". The BBC fandom had thoroughly made an ass of itself by spewing all sorts of hateful bile at the show (before the first episode even aired!). So perhaps the desire to have the "good show", the show that did everything right as a rebuttal went a bit too far there?

Because, yeah, the way some of fandom talked about JLM Holmes did trend towards the dreaded "woobification" and IMO wasn't really reflected in what was going on in the show. So I see what's happening now more as a self-correction in the fandom, as seeing the character as he is and not as this OOC fanfic woobie construct.
