I don't know the guy in your secret, but as for learning about Canada (and some other countries as well), yes, everything I know has been through the awesome work of Kate Beaton. :D

The guy's Red Green, the titular character of the Red Green Show. Red's a handyman who uses duct tape for his handyman jobs, and routinely comes up with useless inventions that never work the way he imagined.

It's a very silly show. There are complete episodes on Youtube if you're interested in getting a taste.
