I love the movie almost as much as I love the series, but I totally see where the dislike comes from. That said, there's a lot of criticisms that I disagree with (e.g. Akio's ridiculous characterisation actually highlights how pathetic his series self really is under all his magnificent bastardry) and as much as I personally like to make all sorts of connections between all the different versions of Utena, it's best to not see the movie as any kind of carbon copy of the show; they're seperate continuities.
