There are people who like the movie more than the show, really? Wow. I watched it right after finishing the show, which I thought was brilliant, and was blown away by how astonishingly terrible the movie was. The first two thirds were a sexed-up, dumbed-down, dubiously coherent retelling of the show's story, and the last third just utterly drifted off into lalaland. So disappointing after watching the series. But tastes differ I guess, people like different things!

and the last third just utterly drifted off into lalaland

It's Revolutionary Girl Utena, the series was well-grounded in lalaland from the start.

I was going to write my own comment but your post covers how i felt about the movie in a much more detailed way. I don't really hate the movie, but i find it a little pretentious. It tries too hard to be edgy. Plus it ruins Utena and Anthy's friendship. But whatevs.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen a lot of people who didn't like it, so you're not the only one. Personally I loved it, though I prefer the series.
Best dancing scene ever y/y

yes, holy shit. Even if you hate the movie for the plotting and the way the characters were handled you can't deny that it has some sequences that are utterly gorgeous.

I liked both. I liked the series more, but the movie did have some merits, and I enjoy it to this day.

but y y y y y Y Y Y, best dancing scene ever *__________*
terabient: Utena and Anthy, ballroom dancing (utenaxanthy)

I liked the art (the Rose Garden was gorgeous beyond belief) but the story was god-awful. Pretty much all the characters were shallower, less sympathetic and less understandable than their TV series counterparts, and the ending was a bunch of metaphorical bullshit. Even the kiss at the end was unsatisfying and felt more like cheap fanservice than anything else. :/

THAT SAID, I didn't know there were so many movie fans out there. I admit that I was never really involved with SKU fandom but I've only seen a few people who genuinely seem to enjoy it.

[personal profile] ex_paola492 2012-11-18 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought everyone and their moms hated the movie. At least that's what I've heard from a lot of fans.
solarbird: (utena)

[personal profile] solarbird 2012-11-18 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
There are some people who like it.

The common response I've heard from people who like it is, "Don't take it literally or seriously, it's like the cast got together after the series wrapped and decided to put on a cabaret version."

Also, Utena looks good in that hat. :D

Commenting for Utena love! ♥♥♥

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, in all honesty, I enjoyed both and I don't think you should worry if you didn't enjoy the movie. At least you tried, right?

For me, I loved the series' use of symbology and the complicated characters and the use of fairytale-type motifs. I enjoyed the movie for the fact that it IS completely on crack, it's a retelling of the same story and to be honest, the art of it is completely gorgeous.

And let's face it- if there was anything in the series that didn't make sense to you, all you have to do is watch the movie and suddenly EVERYTHING makes sense!

I hate the movie too, it's stupid
I mean, it's entertaining in a BAD GOOD way

The only thing good about it is the animation (I hate most of the redone character designs)
mikogalatea: Anthy and Utena from Revolutionary Girl Utena, kissing. ([Utena] Anthy/Utena)

[personal profile] mikogalatea 2012-11-18 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the movie almost as much as I love the series, but I totally see where the dislike comes from. That said, there's a lot of criticisms that I disagree with (e.g. Akio's ridiculous characterisation actually highlights how pathetic his series self really is under all his magnificent bastardry) and as much as I personally like to make all sorts of connections between all the different versions of Utena, it's best to not see the movie as any kind of carbon copy of the show; they're seperate continuities.

I don't like it more than the series, but I still do love this movie in all of its cracky glory. Sorry you don't, but to each their own and at least you're being nice to people who do.

[personal profile] cupofstars 2012-11-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, I love the movie. But I love it like a David Lynch movie: as a collection of pretty, evocative, vaguely-related scenes that kind of form a story if you squint.

I greatly prefer the series, but I kinda liked the movie too. It's just so ridiculous and cracky that I can't hate it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I've still never seen it :C I can't find anywhere to watch it online, and netflix is a bust (and I can't afford to buy the dvd on amazon).

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I love the show. Never had any desire to see the movie, though, because it looks phenomenally stupid.

The movie was pretty, the music was great, but oh dear lord she turns into a car.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
You're not alone. I think the movie was gratuitous fluff. I don't hold it in the same canon continuity as the series AT ALL. This is also very possibly my favorite anime series ever. <3

And whut, I kind of thought that a majority of fans felt this way about the movie...Maybe it was the ending that hooked them ??

I'm only surprised by this secret because I've never met anyone who liked the movie better. The art is prettier, and I like the music more, but the story is a total mess compared to the series.

I've actually only seen the movie... It's pretty ridiculous, haha. I'm sure most people prefer the series!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-21 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
The anime is one of my all-time-favotires (and the manga, too!), but I also hated the movie. You're not alone!
