I've got well over 1,000 readers on some of my stuff at the Pit, and I'm hardly a BNF, but I was writing in a pretty large fandom.

My general ratio of hits to comments is 100 to 1. If I had a story that had 700 hits and only two comments, yeah, I'd be sad and confused, which is what this author's note sounds like to me.

While it is never a good idea to put that sadness and confusion into a note on your story, this case strikes me as inexperience or failure to understand that, rather than entitlement. I've seen entitlement, and no, I doubt that's what was going on here.

That ratio of 100 hits to 1 comment is accurate for me in my fandom, as well. If I had a story with 700 hits and 2 comments, I would assume that I'd written a dud.

The author's notes is a bad place to express the unhappiness that might cause the author, but I agree that it isn't entitlement in this case.
