I find it hard to believe that there could be a fic with 700 readers, unless it's by a hugely popular BNF with a fan following that is guaranteed to leave them more than 2 comments. Those 700 views probably came from a way smaller amount of people, if that number is accurate at all :/

It's extremely possible without being a BNF. Popular pairings in a mega-fandom exist and people all over the world read about them.

Pretty sure that depends on the fandom. I've been in fandoms where I've gotten a fuckton of readers, and ones where I've gotten the same ratio in the secret.

Come on, it happens all the time. Doesn't even need to be a big popular fandom. If you have a fic up for long enough, a lot of people will come by and read it. I'm not any kind of BNF, and I have numbers higher than that on my fics.

Where do you think the fanbase for 50 Shades came from, after all? Publishers didn't buy that puppy on the basis of >700 readers for the fic version.

I've gotten 600+ unique hits (that is to say, different IPs; some are probably the same person with a dynamically assigned IP, but I'd guess that still leave 500+ readers) on a fic with only 5 reviews. So, yeah, I'm thinking it's possible. And this is in a tiny fandom in which I am not a BNF.

I've got well over 1,000 readers on some of my stuff at the Pit, and I'm hardly a BNF, but I was writing in a pretty large fandom.

My general ratio of hits to comments is 100 to 1. If I had a story that had 700 hits and only two comments, yeah, I'd be sad and confused, which is what this author's note sounds like to me.

While it is never a good idea to put that sadness and confusion into a note on your story, this case strikes me as inexperience or failure to understand that, rather than entitlement. I've seen entitlement, and no, I doubt that's what was going on here.

nayrt

That ratio of 100 hits to 1 comment is accurate for me in my fandom, as well. If I had a story with 700 hits and 2 comments, I would assume that I'd written a dud.

The author's notes is a bad place to express the unhappiness that might cause the author, but I agree that it isn't entitlement in this case.

Dude, I have a story with over 40.000 views.

Granted, it's multi-chaptered and very long, posted over a long period of time...and I'm no BNF.

Sure, that's not 40.000 readers, but that's sure as hell more than 700 readers.

700 readers is NOT unrealistic.

I have a fic on A03 with 800 reads and 2 comments even as we speak. And A03 counts unique hits.

The funny thing is, I've seen this same fic discussed positively on an anon meme, seemingly by more people than commented on it.

Sometimes AN's can turn people off.

700 is not that big of a number really.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It happens. Some of my fics have over 5000 hits because I write a popular ship in a big fandom. And the actual reviews are a 10% of those hits if I am lucky. But you know what? It's okay because I am just ecstatic that someone, even just one single person, spent any amount of time telling me they liked the stuff I posted.
