Maybe they got that "self-entitled attitude" because they spent at least an hour to make a product that 700 people used in some way, and are only asking that a fair number of those people take two minutes to say "nice job!" or "needs work."

Sounds fair to me. If two comments out of seven hundred views was all I got, I'd stop writing fanfic, but that's how "self-entitled" I am.

I absolutely hate seeing this. It's a pretty good way to get me to stop reading your work, whether I see this on your blog or your author's notes or your profile. That's mostly because a lot of people that do it have a lot more reviews than most other works and the authors are just being pissy because their fanbase isn't as vocal at the moment. Of course, this isn't ALWAYS true, but...yes, most of the time it is very off-putting.

brightblueink: Madoka looking surprised and holding a cat (this is here because it's adorable)

I'm a fanfic writer but to be honest, if I'm reading somewhere that I can leave "kudos" or something to give a quick "I like it!" then I won't comment unless I really feel like I have something to say. I don't know, I just hate feeling like I'm wasting people's time with pointless comments.

It doesn't help that there's a group of people who feel that "if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all" when it comes to commenting on fanfic, and sometimes the only thing substantive I feel like I could say wouldn't be glowing praise, so...that definitely makes me feel less motivated to leave a comment, too.

And honestly if a fanfic has too many author's notes complaining about reviews or comments (either not getting enough positive comments or not getting enough at all) that's often motivation for me to hit the back button.

well, it is AO3, kudos are what a lot of people (including myself) gravitate towards.

i'm not a writer, but i used to make graphics and that's got a similar comment/usage ratio there. i really liked getting comments that told me what people liked and so on, but i also know that it can feel weird to just leave "pretty!" or "nice job!" comments on something (i always felt like a bit of a tool tbh). like i don't actually have anything to really... say about the work(s) aside from that i liked it, which is why i appreciate kudos.

i don't really know where i'm going with this, i just see both sides of the commenting issue i guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Is my self-esteem just perilously low? Because if I got that kind of reader/commenter ratio (without kudos) I would just assume that my fic suuuuucked and like, go into a shame spiral about it.

While I think putting that in the author notes is not cool, I sympathize. Frankly, I find the self-entitlement of readers incredible. Writers don't have to post fic, they don't have to share. If they do, and it means something to you, then a simple 'thank you' is the least you can do. Why do people feel that they should be able to visit ff.net or AO3 and have their fandom reading needs satisfied and yet give nothing back in return? It's not authors who have entitlement issues if you ask me.

I emailed fb for the very first fanfic I ever read, about 10 years ago. I couldn't believe that someone had written this amazing story and SHARED IT. And that author thanked *me* and said that the relationship between fanfic writers and readers is symbiotic- they need each other. When I started writing myself, I understood what she meant. There is nothing better than to hear from a reader. To have that interaction is inspiring and rewarding, and has sometimes led me to write sequels based on our discussion or to be bitten by new plot bunnies.

It doesn't even take a minute to comment and say 'thank you'. But it means a whole lot. People should do it more often. Unless I really dislike a story, I will always comment and try to say something positive and encouraging. I wonder how many writers have stopped posting because so few people can be bothered to leave fb?

I find it hard to believe that there could be a fic with 700 readers, unless it's by a hugely popular BNF with a fan following that is guaranteed to leave them more than 2 comments. Those 700 views probably came from a way smaller amount of people, if that number is accurate at all :/

I tend to view hit counts on AO3 in the same way I view kudos or comments. Did everybody that click on my fic finish it or enjoy it? Probably not, but it makes me feel warm inside to see the hit count on a story rise. :)

Haven't we had all this before? Readers aren't duty-bound to leave reviews, writers aren't duty-bound to carry on writing fandoms or pairings or WIPs where they're getting no interest. Everyone knows this; and everyone also knows that a) if nobody reviews, most writers will eventually stops writing and b) if nobody writes, would-be readers end up on f!s posting about 'why does nobody ship this? :('

Personally, I'm trying to sustain a rarepair in a small fandom by seconding every prompt and reviewing every fic that comes along in it, as well as writing my own fic. Because I know from personal experience that while 'asspats' are one thing, the difference between one review and no reviews is seriously depressing for anything you've put your time, heart and soul into.

Discovery of the day: I really, really hate the word 'asspats'.

*shrug* When the day comes that a large contingent of authors no longer wail and gnash their teeth over any sort of crit and scream "No one asked you to review! I did this for me!" and another group whines about reviews that are a simple "nice fic," that will be the day that readers start to leave more reviews.

Or robots will have conquered us all by then, and there will be only Starscream porn.

I really do hate entitled people like this.

I write fanfiction because I enjoy it and I enjoy sharing it with others. If it doesn't get a lot of attention after I post it, cool. If it does, that's cool too. But I'm not going to expect people to bow down to me and kiss my feet and lavish praise upon me because I wrote something.

People with this kind of attitude are sort of doing fanfiction wrong, I think.

But if you're viewing my stuff on livejournal, the My Stats/My Guests feature means I know exactly who is reading and not reviewing. I don't bother remembering those names, but I could. It's a nice little tool if someone wanted to be a dick. :/

I wouldn't write an A/N like that, but I have a hard time seeing anything "entitled" about saying please? Almost no one likes an author who openly whines about not getting comments, but my opinion of people who expel so much energy in complaining about those authors is most definitely lower.

I totally agree, OP! Writers should just write their fics for us and then shut the hell up and be grateful for whatever crumbs of feedback readers choose to toss in their direction. They're also not allowed to be disappointed, because that really harshes my squee.

I don't put much faith in hit counts only because it only tells you how many people clicked your link. I've clicked links to fics by accident before or started to read a fic but I didn't enjoy it enough to finish it.

I admit having that kind of A/N is bad form, but how is this sentiment entitled? Writers work hard on their fics, sometimes spending a ton of time on them, and are getting nothing back except those comments. When only a few people out of a few hundred readers leave a few words, it's a little disappointing and starts to make you feel like all your hard work is wasted. You have no idea who or what those few hundred hits are, and you ending up having little to no idea about who actually likes your writing and what they like about it.

I may write for fun, but I post for feedback. If people stop commenting, after a certain point I assume no one's reading it, at which point, why bother posting my work at all? Why bother with that effort of taking what's in your head and making it fun and palatable for others to read? Better to just leave it in my head or under my bed if no one else is going to care enough to even spend ten seconds to say, "I liked your fic!".

To me, 700 hits and 2 comments means a lot of people clicked on it, read it, and didn't like it... ): That's why it's nice to have comments too.

Writers don't have to pander to their audience, readers don't have to comment - Both of these things are true.

However, a lot of writers get inspired by conversations they have with their audience and a lot of writers choose which couples/characters/fandoms to focus on based on which stories their audience seems to respond to.

Is commenting on a fic a requirement? Of course not, but if you spent an hour (or days/weeks/etc if it's a WIP) reading a fic that you really enjoyed, is it REALLY that hard to simply leave feedback saying you liked it? I get that some people are shy or don't know what to say when commenting but you don't have to leave paragraphs of deep analysis. Just a quick 'this was great, thanks for sharing' can do WONDERS for a writer's inspiration/motivation.

And this is even more important when dealing with smaller fandoms or rare pairings that don't have much fic to begin with, as discussion via comments could encourage other people to write that pairing/fandom.
