I don't really read fanfiction outside of AO3, and I always leave at least kudos there if I liked the fic. But let's be honest: very few writers would like to know that the readers didn't like their work.

I'm not going to kudos something I didn't like, and leaving something like "I quit reading after the first chapter, because everyone was completely out of character, I had no interest in your setting, and it would be so much easier to read if this wasn't a huge block of text" as a review is just asking for trouble.

It's true that negative reviews send me panicking, but at least I know what to change. I also love AO3's kudos option. Kudos make me happier than just views and nothing.

but at least I know what to change

If it was concrit rather than just griping or flaming.

Sometimes there is nothing to change though. Sometimes a fic might be perfectly fine, but it doesn't catch my fancy. Or it uses a headcanon I don't like but is not wrong. You can't really leave anything in those cases without coming across as an entitled dick.

I mostly agree with you - I once left a mildly negative review (which I thought was warranted), and the author had a complete meltdown. Now if I don't have something nice to say, I don't say anything, unless I *know* the author actually wants concrit.

But the difference is, that you actually do leave kudos when you like the story.

THat's not the same as people who say I never reply to anything, because I don't owe the authors anything, and to want feedback is somehow omg!entitlement. I think it's only human to want some feedback. It's entitlement to *demand* it. And I don't see the author in this secret demanding it.

I always leave a kudos on the stuff I like, mostly because I read on my tablet or on my phone and they are not comfortable to write reviews.
