it would be nice to know if they liked it or not

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. If only ff.net and LJ had something like the Kudos option. I get so much more feedback since moving to AO3 than I ever did on ff.net or LJ, and most of it is kudos (which I love and am very grateful for).

On ff.net, I've got some stories with tens of thousands of hits and a handfull of reviews. I don't think I'm entitled to reviews, but it is really depressing that a fic attracts so many hits and so little feedback. Are the hits from spambots looking for a nesting site? Are they from people who read the first line and think it's shit? I don't know, but I do get PMs every so often from people saying they've read all my stories and really enjoyed them, and they've never commented before. Maybe if there was a way for people on ff.net to say they liked the fic without committing to favouriting it or having to find something to say about it, they might feel like they can leave some feedback on the stories, and I wouldn't end up as disappointed by the hits to reviews ratio.

Thiiiiis. So much. I get very few comments on AO3, but I don't really mind, because I do get a lot of kudos, and I really don't need flowery verbose detailed praise even on the 100,000+ word stuff. It's just nice to know someone liked it enough to click that button that says they liked it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Except then some people complain *at length* about how rude it is for people to fave or kudo something without commenting on it.

So people don't do anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who posts on AO3: fuck that shit. I love kudos.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
So because one person complains, you decide to do nothing for everyone else? Nice.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
if it WERE just one person, you might have a valid point.

it's not, so you don't.

but +1 on the attempt at emotional manipulation!

Eh, sure, it may not be one person, but I still thing they have a valid point. When you leave kudos, best case scenario, you make someone's day. Most people probably appreciate getting them. If someone doesn't appreciate it, well, that's their problem. It's not like you've expended a lot of energy by leaving a kudos. Certainly not more than you expended reading the fic. So you get the satisfaction of trying to be nice, and they get nothing, because they don't see it for what it is.

I don't really read fanfiction outside of AO3, and I always leave at least kudos there if I liked the fic. But let's be honest: very few writers would like to know that the readers didn't like their work.

I'm not going to kudos something I didn't like, and leaving something like "I quit reading after the first chapter, because everyone was completely out of character, I had no interest in your setting, and it would be so much easier to read if this wasn't a huge block of text" as a review is just asking for trouble.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-18 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It's true that negative reviews send me panicking, but at least I know what to change. I also love AO3's kudos option. Kudos make me happier than just views and nothing.

but at least I know what to change

If it was concrit rather than just griping or flaming.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes there is nothing to change though. Sometimes a fic might be perfectly fine, but it doesn't catch my fancy. Or it uses a headcanon I don't like but is not wrong. You can't really leave anything in those cases without coming across as an entitled dick.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly agree with you - I once left a mildly negative review (which I thought was warranted), and the author had a complete meltdown. Now if I don't have something nice to say, I don't say anything, unless I *know* the author actually wants concrit.

But the difference is, that you actually do leave kudos when you like the story.

THat's not the same as people who say I never reply to anything, because I don't owe the authors anything, and to want feedback is somehow omg!entitlement. I think it's only human to want some feedback. It's entitlement to *demand* it. And I don't see the author in this secret demanding it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I always leave a kudos on the stuff I like, mostly because I read on my tablet or on my phone and they are not comfortable to write reviews.

Personally, I'd think with that comment ratio, a lot didn't. Or didn't want to cop to enjoying it (subject matter), perhaps.

HOW DARE YOU PARTICIPATE IN FANDOM, WHICH IS FOR THE COMMUNAL ENJOYMENT OF SOMETHING, THEN EXPECT A RESPONSE. /rawr rawr, you're so entitled and selfish, blah blah
