Chobits is required reading material in some university classes in gender and sexuality studies

That sounds like some well-meaning teacher trying to pick books "the kids" like as a break from all the dry theory.

Either that, or a young professor trying to prove her- or himself by "stepping outside of the box" and picking out multimedia references.
