That's a scary situation to be in, but at least you did what was right rather than ignoring it. Even if she's still there, hopefully her ire will no longer be aimed at the kids? Perhaps if she is returning she'll be just as afraid to return to work because you and your coworkers know about it and she's the one who is going to need to step carefully.

Are they even able to just drop her ASAP or do they need to wait a few weeks for her to leave, or pay her out?

It's awesome that you and yours didn't ignore the situation. You're really awesome OP.
