If you can't read 3 books in a trilogy and a few odds and ends what are you even doing?

To be fair, LotR is a fairly dense text - I could understand why people might shy away from it, given that even if it's only a few books, the way it's written makes it seem very long. (And I'm a fan).

My advice is read The Hobbit - you can totally read it without understanding any of the complexities of the world or whatever, then, if you're interested, you can read/watch the main trilogy. Technically, LotR is a sequel to the Hobbit!

I love LOTR. LOVE. I inhaled it when I was reading it.

That being said, I HATE when people say, "READ THE HOBBIT FIRST!" I thought it was kind of clunky, and it doesn't flow the way LOTR does. I honestly think LOTR is way easier to read, especially if you've advanced past a third grade reading level.

Haha. To be honest, I read The Hobbit first, but I was pretty young. But LotR is honestly longer, so if someone's concerned about the length of it, the Hobbit is a pretty good bet. Plus, it's a pretty good start into the wider world of Arda - these are hobbits, these are dwarves, this is Gandalf the wizard, these are goblins/orcs, have fun.

I kind of agree with this, though for different reasons. I loved the Hobbit book and hated the LOTR books. I loved the movies, but the books were just too slow and with too much unnecessary stuff that slowed things down. I can see why they are considered good by most people, but I need my books to move at a decent pace. The Hobbit moved faster. There was enough description to picture the world, but not so much that it slowed things down.

But the point is that LOTR and the Hobbit are two different things. The writing styles are different and liking one does not necessarily mean liking the other.

Lol, um, "a few odds and ends"? The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and the History of Middle Earth volumes (although, to be fair, you don't actually have to read those, since the important bits are on the internet anyway) wouldn't be classified as "odds and ends".
