(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 04:22 am (UTC)(link)My advice is read The Hobbit - you can totally read it without understanding any of the complexities of the world or whatever, then, if you're interested, you can read/watch the main trilogy. Technically, LotR is a sequel to the Hobbit!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 08:09 am (UTC)(link)That being said, I HATE when people say, "READ THE HOBBIT FIRST!" I thought it was kind of clunky, and it doesn't flow the way LOTR does. I honestly think LOTR is way easier to read, especially if you've advanced past a third grade reading level.

But the point is that LOTR and the Hobbit are two different things. The writing styles are different and liking one does not necessarily mean liking the other.
