Sheer length? Come on now, the LotR films are long - for films, but they're still shorter than most TV series. (Or you could do it the way my grandmother did when she finally decided to watch them - just watch half a film at a time, hehe.) The Hobbit, behemoth of a film trilogy that it looks set to be, is a short book. And you can leave The Silmarillion and all twelve books of HoME for later.
As for the entire universe... bah, who cares about not getting it all? One of the great things about LotR and The Hobbit in particular is that you're supposed to glimpse some things but not get it all.
Anyway - it's fine not to like Tolkien stuff or just not to be interested, but don't let these things intimidate you.

Agreed. Tolkien himself said this:

"those who enjoy the book as an 'heroic romance' only, and find 'unexplained vistas' part of the literary effect, will neglect the appendices very properly."

Not everyone has to like Tolkien, obviously, OP - there shouldn't be this obligation to read the books/watch the movies/read HoME/whatever. It's fine to dislike Tolkien's books. It's fine to criticise them. It's fine to not care about Tolkien at all.
