One of the great things about LotR and The Hobbit in particular is that you're supposed to glimpse some things but not get it all.

Agreed. Tolkien himself said this:

"those who enjoy the book as an 'heroic romance' only, and find 'unexplained vistas' part of the literary effect, will neglect the appendices very properly."

Not everyone has to like Tolkien, obviously, OP - there shouldn't be this obligation to read the books/watch the movies/read HoME/whatever. It's fine to dislike Tolkien's books. It's fine to criticise them. It's fine to not care about Tolkien at all.
