Tiny little fictional moments that make you cry

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
What are some very minor, insignificant moments in fiction that totally make you cry even though they're not played as a big deal and most other fans don't seem to notice? Just little things like, a throwaway line, or a little gesture or a brief facial expression, or a glimpse of a background event, or a thought or observation on the part of a character in a book, or something. Not elements of some big significant tear-jerking scene, just tiny details that popped out at you.

Toothless in How To Train Your Dragon when he dips his head into the lake but can't catch any fish. It's one shot and it still makes me wanna cry. I just cannot deal with characters being hungry and unable to get food, and animals and children especially.

Not sure if this counts, but the scene in Eight Below where the dogs have just caught some birds for food, and Max is pretty much begging the other dogs to share with him.

My mom laughed at that scene. I think it's supposed to be 'cute', but it broke me up inside for some reason and then the rest of the film practically killed me.

There's that one scene in the first Harry Potter book when Harry confusedly goes "I've got presents?" when he wakes up on Christmas day. I can't read that line without getting a lump in my throat.

Not sure how "small" this moment is considered to be, but when Chewie first gets to Han after the latter is de-carbonized but still blind and wet and frail, and gives him that giant hug. IDK why it's such a big deal to me, but it is. Also, when R2D2 got electrocuted during the battle of Endor I was absolutely certain he was going to die the first time I saw the movie and it totally destroyed my insides for a moment.

That scene in "It's A Wonderful Life" where Uncle Billy is crying at his desk after George yells at him and storms off after searching the town for the misplaced deposit, and his pet squirrel hops on his shoulder and chatters and tries to peek at his face to see what's wrong.

In the Doctor Who episode "Amy's Choice" when Rory dies (for the first time) and Amy turns away from his disintegrated body to stand up, the Doctor reaches out to help her but his hands just kind of tremble a couple inches above her back for a moment before he backs away and clasps them to his chest and looks at them to hide his face from Amy. That snippet hurt so much I had to look away whenever I rewatched the episode.

This is ridiculous, but there's one Simpsons couch gag where the sofa comes alive and tries to eat them, and when they flee the house Homer gets to the door first, and then stands aside and holds it open to let Marge and the kids run out in front of him. For some reason that detail just seared itself on my brain.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King: During Argaron's Crowning ceremony, there's the scene with the elves... The banner moves aside and we see Arwen. The first time I watched the scene (and thus every time after) I found myself looking not at her, but at Elrond. The look on his face; knowing his daughter is giving up her immortality to live a mortal life with the man she loves... the expression on his face just breaks my heart.

I have something in my eye.

Edited to add: The kiss on the head Frodo gives Sam at the end of the trilogy. I have no idea if that's supposed to be a tearjerker moment or not, but it always gets me. Always.

Mine is later on in that same scene when the whole kingdom bows to the hobbits. I bawl like a baby there.

The 2007 Transformers film: The look on Optimus Prime's face as he takes the fragment of Allspark Cube out of Megatron's chest and looks at it. I see it as he's saying goodbye to his world.

Ugh, this is going to sound so stupid because it's Glee, but in the second episode when Will and Terri are looking at houses, there's the voiceover line that says something to the effect of, “My father always said you become a man when you buy your first house. I'm not sure what he meant by that, since he burned ours down once after a drunken fight with Mom.” I hated the character and now hate the show (it's become so freakin' terrible, my god), but that line stuck with me for some reason. And yes, I know it's supposed to be a bit of dark comedy there but it's still sad to me.

In One Piece, when Whitebeard calls Ace his son, I started sniffling. I mean, that scene was ridiculously emotional, but of all the things, the fact that Ace got have a dad kills me with happy-sad.

The line in Philosopher's Stone, about how there are some things you can't go through without becoming friends. It never made me emotional for YEARS, until after DH when I reread the series, and I got to that line, and it made me sob because it was the beginning of the trio.
