Bronies are some of the nicest people I've met. If fans of something are going to get anything cancelled, it's probably Sherlock. Or maybe I just know too many insane Sherlockians.

Bronies are some of the nicest people you've met? That's very surprising. But then I'm not in the fandom so anything I hear about Bronies is just all the douchie dudes being assholes that get attention and spread around the web.

Honestly it's the same as every other big fandom. You'll get some people with some bad experiences from what is a minority of the fanbase being horrible and everybody says it's the whole fandom and that fandom is the worst. The truth is that most times you'll end up finding nice people in the fandom, any fandom. Even, much as I hate to admit it, things like twilight.

I will concede however, that Bronies have some of the worst FANS, as individuals, but just because they lowered the bar doesn't mean everybody hangs out at that level.

It's safe to say 99% of bronies are as horrified this exists as you are.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a bit less than 99 percent. Especially considering what happened with that rapist brony and his fans, the constant 'what pony would I rape' threads on 4chan and the like, and well...a good chunk of the fandom is outright porn.

Wait. Wat?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Max Veers. He admitted to raping an underage girl, and afterwards harassing and blaming her for the rape. He's also known for being a disgusting creep in general.

Naturally, hundreds of bronies jumped to his defense the moment this came out.

Max Veers is horrid scum, but he and his are not exclusive to one fandom. Which is admittedly rather depressing. It'd be nice if this only happened in one place.

Like I said, I think the bar is sadly a bit lower in this fandom then many. But the dregs are still that: the dregs.

As said above and something I can anecdotally contribute to: I've yet to meet any actual bronies such as this. And hope to never do so.

I won't pretend the group is a shining paragon either, but I think there's still a large difference between the people who want porn of applejack and the idiots who'd wear that shirt.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!

I'm glad you found a nice pocket. The rest as complete scumbags.

Lucky. I can count on one hand the number of bronies I've met who weren't complete asshats.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Bronies are generally okay if you're talking to them with a screen name attached, but after a while you either wear out your welcome, or they'll go on anon to be a jerk to ya. or they'll be a jerk while you yourself are anon.

idk, I think the worst section of bronies I've seen were always on image dump booru sites or whatever. (not image boards mind you, though some of them on mlpchan can be douchey mic nit-picks)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
The nicest bronies I ever met were still pretty quick to call Rarity a whiny little bitch when I said she was my favorite character, and then try to show me their Cupcakes-inspired desktop wallpaper.
No thanks.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Are you talking about the same bronies that protected and lashed out against a rapist/rape victim, calling the victim a slut and the rapist a "Nice guy who was unfairly treated. He was horny! It wasn't his fault he forced an underaged girl to give him a BJ after she told him no over and over and to get out of her truck. ;^;"? Because no. Just out right freakin no.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
some people defended that scumbag but I'm pretty sure that not all of the fandom was supporting them.

I and the MLP fans I know would be more likely to break his face in than actually *gagpukecough* support him. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of other older MLP fans (including the adult females yes we exist) resented him for what he did and for giving the rest a bad name. (I'm normally a pushover who's about as assertive as a soft cuddly bunny. but if confronted with that guy I'd probably get myself a murder charge. :/)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
But then again "fans of MLP" is not the same thing as "bronies"...

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
some people just see it is a name for older MLP fans and nothing more. My first introduction to the community was a very friendly group of people on the general/kid friendly subreddit and the people who made fan songs. I told them that I was a girl and it was just like "*shrug* that's cool, who's your favorite pony?" . Also I have to admit I thought the fan songs were pretty damn cool. I wish some of my other fandoms did that. (let me tell you if I could actually do anything with music I would have done a few songs for DP fandom just to kickstart it)

But anyway, every fandom has their weirdoes and creepos. But not everyone is like the weirdos and creepos and you can call out the bad ones without telling most of the rest of fandom off for something they didn't do. It's not like other fandoms have never done some awful unacceptable shit. Like Harry Potter Potter fandom, there was a subset of people who sent the author death threats for the epilogue. and don't get me started on the creepy bashing fics (like that one where Hermione magically makes Ron rape himself because the nutso author thinks he's some kind of irredeemable person for being a blunt and sometimes tactless teenage boy.)

Or the stuff that goes on in DP fandom...like the horrific fanwars and the fandom crusaders who take some requests of the author and then go wild attacking people for referencing anything even kind of adult (even if the character is an adult and...um a fucking villain.)

I'm not defending what that guy did, it was horrible and gross and wrong in every way. But his supporters are not the entire fandom or even all of the bronies. Some people just picked up brony as a nickname for MLP fans.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
*Harry Potter

..wow what is wrong with my hands?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
You must really like Harry Potter...

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2012-11-22 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Right, and most of these same "nice people" sent death threats upon one person -whom they saw as the scapegoat/reason- over the editing of a background character who, let's be real here, was pretty much a stereotype of an intellectually disabled person. To the point where people from the show -including the writer of the episode that got edited in question- had to step in and tell people to back off. Yet they still kept harassing that one person.

Bronies are some of the nicest people, indeed.

In all seriousness, I get that they're not all bad people, but you are familiar with the old saw about one (or more) rotten apple(s) ruining a whole barrel, right?

I heard there was going to be a 'Derpy' episode this season. The wank over her being called Ditzy Doo will be hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Even if you don't see the unedited version of the character as an offensive stereotype, it's really really really fucking horrible for that many people to jump on a person, especially the way that they did, for not liking something about the show.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's very hard not to. I know the VA said she thought she was voicing a boy, but....it's really obvious. And 'derp' is a negative comments /because/ it means someone who is mentally handicapped. So yeah. She/he had every right not to like the show and to get it changed. MLPFIM is NOT and will NEVER be a show for adult males and their internet culture. It's a show for children/little girls. I really hope they stop throwing them a bone, it only validates their entitlement. ;/

[personal profile] museridden 2012-11-23 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if the VA did think she was voicing a boy, she based the voice on a kid she knew who was "as slow as a tree", iirc.

*blink*

I love the show. I'm an unrepentant fan of it. I've made fanart. (8 pictures because a silly joke occurred to me, and I had to do a series based around it.)

But...

The fandom in general is scary, d00d. Navigating around the porn (humanized, anthropomorphic, and show-accurate), the gross-out shock fics/art (Cupcakes et al), the wank, and the general creepy - and, yes, the entitlement - is so hard to do that I've given up trying to discuss the show with any but a small group of my friends in an otherwise non-Pony place...

Maybe, maybe the good ones outnumber the freaks in actual numbers, but the freaks are louder by several orders of magnitude.
