I'm in England too and in my experience it's common and the level of offence is determined by the tone and the context. It's not as offensive as it would be in the US where they get fits of the vapours at even the mildest swearing. Cunt is very, very common in parts of Scotland and, again, tone and context determine the level of offence.

That's not the problem: swearing, including heavy swearing, is pretty common among young people and certain subcultures. The problem is that c*** (see, I'm even censoring it!) has a radically different connotation in the U.S. It's just about the worst thing you can ever call a woman here.

Well, that puts the whole Avengers "quim" freak-out in context.

I was actually shocked that any amount of people in the US knew what 'quim' was - it's a bit old-fashioned.

[personal profile] lovelycudy 2012-11-22 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't know that.

Didn't know what it meant or didn't know it was old-fashioned?

[personal profile] lovelycudy 2012-11-22 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
That it wasn't well-known.

Ah. Yeah, it's just not a word that many people in the US, at least, would know or use.

I didn't know what it was before the Loki line.

I'd be shocked if any of the people in the theatre the day we saw Avengers had a clue, frankly.

I kind of took its rough meaning from context that it was somewhat equivalent to 'cunt' or whatever, but then I still had to look it up later on.

I knew it 'cause i tend to read old stuff/UK authors. Plus i like reading the dictionary, so looking up words is fun and distracting.

It is, isn't it? :)

'It's just about the worst thing you can ever call a woman here.'

Worst swearword period, at least in my experience. (My mother has a mouth like a truck driver, so cursing in general barely fazed me, but if she was mad enough to use that one it was time to go hide in my room.)

I find it surprising that there are contexts in which it's affectionate, but...if there are, so what? If it's being used between people who don't find it offensive, what's the harm?

If it's used to someone who *does* find it offensive, that's another matter, particularly if a polite request to cease doing so is ignored. But that doesn't seem to be what's being talked about here. It sounds like people who want to dictate how two consenting adults can interact because *they* find it objectionable. Perhaps they should propose an amendment.

Or to put it another way - I find n***** vastly more offensive and irritating than c*** (and I'm a white female, go figure, but then I grew up in a racist environment where it was used casually and often), and I cringe when I hear it used - even between black co-workers who use it to describe themselves or others. But the fact that I'm cringing hardly makes it my place to demand that they stop.
