Language evolves, and yet sexism and sexist words are still here!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
So language evolves except when it doesn't? Words can evolve but the word cunt is an exception?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
but the sexist words will be different words because the language changed

you can't hold only one element static and say it didn't change

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
but their root is still sexist

and sexism is still prevalent within language and society - society across the globe I mean, so don't give me some bullshit about 'in YOUR society maybe' because if you do I will have to assume you are even more wilfully ignorant than you already appear to be

Shit this isn't difficult stuff, go look up a sexism 101 list on google or something

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
well, if it's headed anything "101" - an American educational reference - it will have been compiled by professionally offended US college students, so I'll not bother, thanks

I like this comment

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
no

the root of the word penis is tail, but nobody gives a damn and nobody cares

they just think penis is a guy's junk

it doesn't matter if the root is sexist, the damn word doesn't mean the same thing anymore

are you going to keep shoving the old definition in people's faces and scream, "look! look here! this word is sexist! you can't use it" when nobody is using the word in a sexist way anymore?

cuz that's pretty stupid

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even care if I agree with you the stupidity of your argument offends me. No one anywhere is still using penis to mean tail.

Please try again because I'm finding this thread fascinating.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
And no one *here* is using cunt to mean female genitalia. They may use it there where you are in that context, but not here. Context is important and so long as you refuse to see people outside of North America using cunt in their context and choose instead to view it in your own sexist context, then you will have a problem. Because you aren't going to change how the English speaking world outside of your continent uses language.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
And yet, people in plenty of places do use cunt to refer to female genitalia. Fuck, people in this thread have said "hey, I use it to refer to my vagina!"

So it's really obviously not divorced from the context of meaning vagina.

It's not a North America-specific context. It is a sexist slur. Everywhere. It's just that it's a more commonly used and accepted slur in England than it is in North America.

I mean, look, it's like saying that because 'spazz' (a word that, to my understanding, is a hugely offensive ableist slur in England) is a frequently used word in some parts of North America and most people don't realize that it has ableist origins, that means it's totally okay for people in North America to keep using it. It's not. Just because the majority of people aren't aware of its actual meaning doesn't mean that meaning isn't still there.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Your life is very empty, isn't it? It's amazing that you learned all that you did in your college sociology course because you are incredibly thick. Of course it's okay for people in North America to use spaz because of the context in which they are using it. If they go to the UK and use it, then it's offensive. It's called context. If you don't like the way we use cunt, don't come here. Stay away from Brits in general if it's that much of a problem for you. You can start by tossing your computer and mobile in the bin because we're not going to leave the internet anymore than we're going to change our language just to suit you.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
How about this - if you don't want people to get on your case for using sexist slurs, don't use them.

Amazing thought, huh? What do you say?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
You can call it sexist all you want. It's even true for you where you live. You really need to understand that your views and even the common views of the people where you live do not apply to the whole world. Go ahead and call everybody asshole. Get upset and resort to insults in the face of reason. It's amusing to more than a few of us, judging by the replies.

Also, thank you for ignoring this: And yet, people in plenty of places do use cunt to refer to female genitalia. Fuck, people in this thread have said "hey, I use it to refer to my vagina!"

So it's really obviously not divorced from the context of meaning vagina.

it just goes to show you don't actually have any argument to make in your favour.

Funnily enough, in french slang, we use the word "queue" to mean penis. And the first meaning of "queue" is tail. So maybe no one anywhere is still using penis to mean tail but some people somewhere use tail to mean penis.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
I will be thinking about this the next time I'm queuing and giggling to myself. Thanks, nonny!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
;P We also use "queue" to mean queue of course so I've always assumed that this word was just a general one for "things that are long and move/grow".

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, we use "tail" in my language too. And "tail" is used to describe that annoying thing/person that is always trailing after you. Which just makes me laugh on some days.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
AHAH Must make for some interestingly confusing situations sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
..so you're saying that no one anywhere still uses 'penis' to mean 'tail', but at the same time you're also saying that it ISN'T possible for anyone anywhere to mean 'cunt' as a term of endearment, or that it's possible it has a different meaning?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, here's one for you.

Fag.

Two meanings.

Uk & Ireland - common slang for cigarette

North America - gay man - derogatory (though partially reclaimed)

Same word, but two different things, yes? But they have the same root. Faggot - a bundle of sticks used to start a fire.

For cigarette, that's a easy one - a stick shaped object you burn. For gay men, same thing - something you set on fire when you execute them for sodomy. It's a violent homophobic insult. Yet, in London, if I ask someone to light my fag, I'm not suggesting they set fire to my gay friend - I just want to borrow their lighter. Should we stop using fag to mean cigarette because it has the same root as a horrible homophobic insult? Or is cunt still super-speshul in that regard?

This comment should win an award.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
In this case this slur came from an actual word. Not people trying to justify using using a sexist slur as a generic slur because magic intent.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
contrary to popular internet belief, intent and context do matter. Just because SJWs are too obtuse and doctrinaire to know the difference between hate-speech and affectionate mockery doesn't mean the rest of us don't.

okay, but the root of the word 'fag' was not homophobic. so are you also implying that homosexual people do not have the right to be offended when they are called fags, because the root of the word fag has nothing to do with being gay? because you can't say that it works one way but not the other, or for one word and not a different word.
