the entire reason it's an insult is because it's comparing someone to a female dog

Actually, to a lot of people, "bitch" is an insult because they were taught that it's an insult. Really. Very few people are deliberate about the female dog comparison.

exactly

when I tell people a bitch is a female dog, they give me weird looks and say "lol k" and ignore me

or they laugh and say I'm taking the word too literally

which means they weren't thinking about female dogs when they said it

And? What the fuck does that prove?

Just because they're not literally thinking "female dog" every time they say it doesn't erase the meaning and the context of that meaning!

Oh my god, how fucking wilfully simple-minded and ignorant do you have to be to think what you've just said is a good argument? AUGH.

I want to think everyone in this thread arguing for why sexist words aren't sexist is a troll, but unfortunately I am all to aware that this is the attitude most people in the real world share. Which is why sexism is still so very prevalent. Woohoo.

You Win.

It's completely sexist and can only be used in the most vile, demeaning way. In that case: you're a cunt.

Do you honestly think the prevalence of sexism in society is due in significant part to the use of words that most people use outside their original meaning??

I think letting it be so divisive is at least as harmful as whatever "damage" it's doing (and it's unclear to me exactly what damage that is) to use words like "cunt" the way it's usually used (for example, as part of banter among friends)
