No. First, you can shorten United States of America to USA. Easier, see? Second, your country is not the continent. Most of the time, people seem to forget there's anything else in America - the continent - than just the United States. There's 35 countries in our continent, including two other huge countries like Canada and Brazil and 'Americans' still love to make it all about themselves :).

(Nothing against other Americans, btw, it's just something that bothers not only me, but MANY other people outside the USA)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, except the "USA" is pronounced "America" (or some variation of America) in other languages. I can vouch for Japanese at least, were if you say "USA-jin" instead of "Amerika-jin", you're going to get some pretty funny stares.

To be fair though, original country names all sound a little silly; you have China (in Chinese) literally meaning "the Middle Kingdom" even though it sits nowhere on the equator and Japan (in Japanese) meaning "Land of the Sun" (or "Sun book", depending on which trollnunciation you prescribe) and again, the idea of the sun revolving around the earth, much less a nation, is just plain silly.

To hell if those countries should be asked to change those names though. Not even kidding, I think they're quite charming.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
If you're translating the names of China literally, you know China in Chinese doesn't mean "Middle Kingdom" right? China (PRC) means "Central-Hua People's Republic" (中华人民共和国) and China (Taiwan) means "Central-Hua People's Republic" (中華民國). One name has more words than the other but they both mean the same thing.

Or, maybe you're talking about the colloquial name for China, 中國/中国. Guess what, the name has nothing to do with the equator. 中 doesn't only mean middle, 中 also means center. So 中國 actually means "Center Country". Why center? Because there were the Yi people to the west, the Man people to the South, the Rong to the west and the Di to the north. The Hua (华/華) people, the Chinese, lived in the country in the center of all these other peoples. This name makes perfect sense and I've no idea why you think it has anything to do with the equator.

Oh, and the name for Japan, 日本, means "Sun Origin" not "Sun Book." Why sun origin? Because it's the easternmost country in Asia until you sail across the Pacific and hit North America, which Asia didn't know about until fairly recently. So guess what, to the rest of Asia (and the world at the time), it looked like the sun rose from Japan. That's why its name is "Land of the Rising Sun." It's poetic.

Next time, get your facts straight before giving us all lectures about how country names are silly and their names need to be changed.

DA You missed the part where anon said their names were charming right and how they should not be asked to change their names? I think you should apologize for letting your butthurt cloud your reading comprehension.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh really. The anon never said the names names shouldn't be changed and said the names were silly. Adding "they're quite charming" didn't negate what the anon said beforehand.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you need to be so defensive towards Japan and China? Their names are silly and self-centered -- like so many original-language names -- and out of place in the modern day. Just because it's absolutely certain that the world is no longer flat and larger than Asia (therefore, the sun can't be said to rise from Japan) doesn't mean Japan should change its name. Just because the world is larger than China then (which means it's not more in the middle than anything other nation in, you know, a globe) doesn't mean it should change its name. My original point stands.

And out of curiosity, did you choose to ignore the first part of my post (you know, the one that pointed out the flaws with other "American" nations complaining about USA being shortened to America wasn't just an American thing but also something done outside of the US)? I don't know, it just seems odd that you would choose to focus on defending the Eastern countries when that wasn't what the comment was about.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't get it do you? You can't make up reasons for country names and say they are silly. Many countries have self centered names. Who are you to say they're "out of place?"

If you want to complain about USA being called "America" in other countries, why not ask yourself why people in the USA call their country America and themselves Americans? I bet the other countries say that because 1)USA-sians or USA-nian or USA-whatever isn't a word they hear used for "Americans" and 2) because "American" is a very common word used to call people from the USA.

As for your example with Japanese, nobody knows what USA-jin is because nobody in Japan uses the letters U S and A to mean "USA" in Japanese. If you didn't want to say "Amerika-jin" you could have used "米国人" which I'm sure everyone understands.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Except if you take a step back and look, most country names are silly. That's not to say they aren't charming and that's not to say they should be changed (cue original point), just that their origins are pretty silly.

I wasn't complaining about that at all.

In fact, I'm pretty sure we're on the same side regarding this issue of nomenclature. What a pity.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, way to miss the point. Why is it that there are always such butthurt people about every issue in every thread?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's wank night and OP hooked a big one!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Still, there are brilliant gems that come out of wank sessions like these. Like the for my people for the horses moment. Oh god, my sides.
