I didn't know anyone uses ff.net anymore

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
They certainly do!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of people still do. I don't read fic there (I really can't stand the layout), but I cross-post everything that isn't against TOS from AO3. Generally I get two to three times the amount of hits I get on AO3 as well.

I didn't realize it either, until a year or so ago when a story I was following would be updated there first.

Unfortunately, a lot of people still post there, which I hate because I've gotten viruses from that site twice. I don't go there anymore, which makes me sad, because some of my favorite older fics are only posted there as far as I can tell. :(

It's good for your ego!

Tons of comments. (Mostly shallow praise, occasionally some bashing.)

Tons of "follows"/"favorites"/"story alerts", etc.

It's mostly that it receives a lot of traffic, so if you write for a big fandom and/or popular characters/pairings/scenarios, you will get hits (and fairly shallow feedback, but feedback nonetheless), no matter how mediocre your story is.

One of my fandoms has a grand total of 67 fics on AO3 while there are a couple thousand on FF.net. Granted, most of them on FF.net are self-inserts that make me want to beat my head against my keyboard, but I've definitely got more to pick from there.

I still post to FF.net as well, since I find the AO3 system intimidating.

Point is, yes, people still do use FF.net.

Am I the only one who had trouble understanding this secret?

(Part of it is that I don't really get those fill-in-the-blank secrets, like, which parts are we supposed to read as part of the secret?)

[personal profile] ex_paola492 2012-11-22 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I had trouble trying to understand it, too. I thought the actual secret was that FFN is not the place to play Dear Abby, and was really confused.

[personal profile] ex_paola492 2012-11-22 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
omg ff.net. I feel old. Last time I heard, the staff where a bunch of dicks.

> I'm jealous of how many reviews they get.

Uh, they are interactive fics. They are obviously going to get more reviews. (Not that I care about those types of fics, but...)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's pretty sad. This isn't even a case of quantity vs quality. You can't really compare reviews on an interactive fic to reviews on a non-interactive fic.

I don't quite understand what "interactive fic" means, tbh.

Like, it is Mad Libs?

If at the end of a chapter, the author says, "Hey, guys, I have two ideas for how this could go, X and Y, what should I do?" is that interactive?

Is this fic (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5180337/1/Dear-Joker) an interactive fic? People used to be able to submit "questions" to the "advice column" in-universe (until the author's inbox got backed up). But there's been a plot, and it's IC, and above all it's good, so why is that a bad thing, if it's interactive?

help?

[personal profile] lyndis 2012-11-23 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Interactive fics are like, "ask the character a question and they'll answer it!" type of a 'fic. In the case of this secret, it looks like the fandom the OP is talking about is one where fic authors play "Dear Abby" (a newspaper column, along with Ann Landers, that has writers write in with etiquette/personal questions to get advice) and reviewers review because they want the canon characters to answer their questions.

See also: "Interview" fics, "Choose Your Own Adventure" fics can sometimes be filed under here also (though rarely).

Either way, FFn has rules regarding the types of stories allowed. Stuff like script/interactive hasn't been allowed for years.

The 'fic in question is an interactive fic (the one you linked), if the author is letting readers submit questions for the character to answer, yes. That stuff belongs at an archive that allows that type of story, IC or not.

I might be a bit of a stickler for the rules, but FFn's rules are not new, and people should know better than to post stories that are more obviously interactive ("I can take this story X and Y way, what do you think?" is asking an opinion, not interactive in that the author is writing the characters interacting with the readers) like "Dear Abby"-esque stuff.

I honestly don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I wouldn't hold it against the OP for reporting 'fics like that. Seems like a waste of time to me, personally (to report, nothing ever gets done), but the author is well within their limits considering FFn makes you review their rules every three days or something stupid. There are no excuses for posting 'fics against the ToS.

Hope that helps answer your question though.

It's petty, but they're the ones breaking the rules. There are plenty of places to post fic that aren't restrictive about what you post, so if someone wants to do a "Ask Such-and-Such" type story, they can go to one of those.

You still sound childish as all hell, though, but I'm sure you know that or why keep it secret.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
stories like those make me irrationally angry

keep it to a tumblr ask blog

where it belongs

get it off ff.net/whereever else you decide to post it

i'd do the same, op

If the report function didn't require me to allow their shitty, apparently virus-riddled scripts, I would too.

Thank you OP, for attempting to make the pit of the Internet somewhat more tolerable. I salute you.

(I'm not being sarcastic, ff.net really is shit and I'm glad someone's enforcing the rules on there.)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, reporting is not enough.

The mods let reports pile up for -I kid you not- months at best, years at most, blindly go through a few of the pile for a few weeks, and then call it a day, so wrongly/grudge reported stories get deleted and a bunch of rules-breaking stories remain anyway.

The mods are ridiculously terrible at enforcing the rules.

The only time outside of "purge time" I've seen them reply promptly to a report was this one time that I reported a troll account that uploaded a picture of goatse as their profile icon.

I wonder why these stories are banned from that site? Is there some kind of, I dunno, ecology of comments that they're trying to preserve? Why do they care about stories getting reviews that aren't feedback? I'd have a hard time believing that allowing interactive comments would strain their servers. Do they just have such an immense stick up their ass about notions of How Things Are Done?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-23 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Because in the olden days, these kinds of stories were an infestation. You could read through the archive, and 1 out 5 or so stories would be an interactive/MST-ing/poll/songfic chat-speak "story". At best.

As shitty as their moderation is, the ratio of utter-crap to actually readable stories used to be so, so much worse.

I hear it was even worse before they banned NC-17, but I can't personally attest to that.

Just as an idea, a "song-fic" could be like 70% song lyrics and 20% story, and 10% author's notes/review plz, thanks to the following reviewers drivel

cuteneko87: omygod your comment made me blush, blah blah blah
kawaiizeroagent: yes, you will see that next chapter thanks for your review

etc.

A chat-speak/script-fic (I kid you not):

Naruto: :3 Sasuke come have my babies
Sasuke: ^^U Naruto, I can't, I love Sakura
Sakura: *.* ohmygod really *megaton punches Naruto*

(occasionally they were funny, but they mostly were... pointless)
