You can't help what you like anon. Plenty of us like things we know are crap but can't change the feelings about. Just try not to take it too personally when someone else hates something for the very same reasons. Remember, it's not an attack on you. Heck, you know you like this DESPITE your tastes.

Yes to all of this. People don't watch, say, reality TV for their interesting plots and complex characters. At least Glee has some music to go along with it (although their cover of "Rolling in the Deep" is probably the soundtrack to hell).

Wasn't the reason she didn't like sex more tied up in her OCD than anything else, though? I'm not sure she was meant to be portrayed as a genuine asexual (because, y'know, Glee handles shit like sexual orientation so delicately) so much as someone who found every aspect of life disgusting and in need of sanitization.

Probably. I'll have to go back and re-watch the episodes (usually my eyes glaze over the second Will's face appears on the screen) but she never struck me as an asexual character, just someone who was extremely sheltered and mysophobic.

OP

I don't know, I'm probably just projecting, but I saw her as asexual, because her attitudes to sex reminded me very much of mine. I don't have OCD but when it comes to intimacy I become exactly as wound up, which is why I was hurt that this was portrayed as something that needed to be corrected.

I was just gonna say. I quit watching Glee, but I remember Emma being specifically portrayed as OCD, but not as specifically asexual. Unless this has changed since I quit watching.

What did they do to her hair? It looks so normal and conventionally attractive.

I like the music too, and IDEC. Some of the songs are better than others, and none of it's better than the originals but...I have a good time listening to it and that's all that matters.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I literally don't understand the hate that the Glee music gets. To me, the WORST music that could possibly exist is out of tune and off the beat. If something's out of tune, it could be the most soulful and wonderful lyrics ever written, I WOULD STILL THINK IT'S CRAPPY. There's a basic level of musicality that, you know, MUSIC is supposed to have. Yes, the Glee songs aren't originals and usually aren't better than the originals. Covers aren't inherently terrible - they're just different. I have both the originals and the Glee covers of a lot of songs, and listen to both on different days. IT'S POSSIBLE TO LIKE SOMETHING POPULAR AND NOT BE MAINSTREAM, YOU GUYS.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually don't care much about Glee one way or the other, but I'm glad they've done so many covers of songs because they've introduced a lot of music to a lot of kids. And it's neat coming across high school glee clubs raising money for things in the subway. That never happened before the show.

Yay harmony!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. As an Asexual I was called a prude all my life, long before I learned what Asexuality was. Of course I wasn't going around saying "Ew you're having sex? Ewwwww!" I was called a prude for personally saying I wasn't interested in having sex or dating.

I can see why hearing that would be annoying :/

I don't watch the show anymore, but a lot of their covers were decent to good. It's their covers of recent pop hits which they phone in that are complete shit.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-11-24 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I stuck around as long as I did only because I liked the music. Honestly that's the only reason I started watching in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a fan for the music, really, rather than the plot of the show. Not all of it is good, but I wouldn't say it's the complete worst. Some of the stuff is rather nice, especially when it's stripped down (like the cover of Britney Spears' "3," which I thought was better than the original).
I wish they could go back to pulling kids and actors from Broadway again - there are voices there that just really shine.

Ah, Glee. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I hate it. Same goes for its music. Don't feel bad, OP.

I don't watch the show, but I liked most of the covers I've heard. Maybe because people were reccing me only the best ones, but still, I really don't think they're the absolute worst.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
...The shitty cover music is what started my hatred for Glee. The fucked up writing and that every character is deep down a horrible person who is never called out on their shit just makes me confident I got the right impression.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-25 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
I still remember when the first ads for Glee came out, complete with hints of shitty cover songs to come. I thought "lol this shit looks awful nobody will watch it."

I wish I had been right. (about the audience, I was right about the quality)

Meh. I love Glee. The songs make me happy. I don't care who hates it. Frankly I even stopped caring about the giant gaping plot holes.

Glee's music was the fun part for me. I left the fandom because I couldn't stop raging about the character and plot inconsistencies. I thought perhaps it was best for the both of us to part ways before I found myself in an extremely masochistic situation.

There's nothing wrong with the music or the singing.

The rampant autotuning, however, is an embarrassment to real musicians. I feel bad for these poor actors, who are clearly talented, but who rarely get the chance to have their voices properly showcased
