Same. I don't understand portmanteaus. Is it really that hard to say/spell the names that make up your ship?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
On my shitty phone it is, yeah.

I don't see why it's so hard to figure out what an abbreviation means.

They're very convenient for tagging.

On Tumblr especially you can't lose slashes without b0rking the url, and variations like 'First name + First name', 'Last name + last name' etc will splice into different tags. A standardised portmanteau fixes that.

But even before Tumblr they were useful for Google search. Google doesn't recognise '/' compounds either.

I agreeish, I don't get them. But I don't really care if anyone else wants to use them.

The only shipping name I'm okay with is: Angry Birds for Bruce Banner/Clint Barton and no one is using it...

But what about Stark Spangled Banner for Tony/Steve/Bruce? :D

I just like the punny ones, tbh.

I don't get it at all. Some portmanteaus are fun, some of them are ugly, but I've always been pretty indifferent to the concept itself. Really, I don't even understand why "Johnlock" freaks people out. I guess I'm just used to it by now, although I don't ship it.

Oh man, they're so painful. I don't want to hit anyone, but there is much groaning and eye rolling on my part.

I just discovered a new one in a fandom that previously had none. In order to promote het over the popular slash pairing, a rash of "Dotty" fics have popped up in the pit strewn among the million Mary sue fics. The amount of "A mysterious new girl" and "Main character's baby sister/cousin/twin" fics is hilarious!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
They're fucking useful, though. Especially if the characters involved have really common names and you don't want to deal with irrelevant results in an archive search. Or if you're on tumblr and want to obfuscate the content of your post except with people who also ship what you ship.

Ah, I tried to think up a really ridiculous portmanteau just for the sake of the experiment and ended up with "Moc" for Marty/Doc. Now I can't stop laughing.

Kirk/Spock portmanteau that must be here

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, no! I started to think about the Kirk/Spock one and now its Kock

It's the silliest one I've ever thought of

I'm crying

Now it's the right thread

Portmanteaus put my teeth on edge. I'm sorry, but I just cannot take someone seriously when they're having some deep analytical discussion and keep referring to "Spuffy" or "Stony" or "Spirk" or something like that. No offense.

However, for some reason I don't have a problem with "Kataang" or "Zutara". I have no idea why...

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-11-24 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The only ones I can remember liking are McShep and McDanno (probably because they sound like something off the McDonald's menu). I'd rather write down the names of the characters though; I just think it looks nicer. People will do what they want though, and it doesn't bother me too much.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's got to the point where I use an extension that replaces certain smush names with the longform because I'm so sick to the back teeth of them.

So, F!S, which smush names do you hate/like the most?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like Johnlock and Joanlock. Nothing to do with the pairings, but I just don't like how they sound. Yullen, on the other hand, makes me shudder because of some fans I associate with the pairing.

A good one that I can think of is Peeniss. I can't imagine using it seriously to tag discussions or art, but it made me laugh when I first heard it :D

(Anonymous) 2012-11-24 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a LotR veteran who occasionally dabbles in Merlin fandom, and calling Arthur/Gwen Arwen confuses me every. damn. time.

Better than the ship names, honestly. Sometimes you can't figure out that stuff.

My main ship in one fandom is addressed as 'Swordshipping.' Not so bad I guess, but then take a glance over the names in the Pokemon fandom. Pick a word that crops up in the fandom, tag it to 'shipping' and it's probably a pair. I don't know if even Bulbapedia keeps up with all that.

Then there's the Harry Potter stuff, which isn't quite as bad as Pokemon for volume, but for quite a while 'HMS' was tagged to the front of all of them. You'd get ship names ranging from 'Wolfstar' to 'The Government Stole My Toad.' *headwall*

So no, at least with most portmanteaus I can figure out who's involved without having to consult a guide--mental or actual.

I never ever will understand the hate for portmanteaus. I know it's a thing - I've seen people raging about it as long as I've been in fandom - but I'll never get what it is about them that irritates people so badly. I mean, do you rage quite as badly when they pop in real life, in a non-fandom/entertainment context?

Having said that, I'm not saying there aren't some really stupid ones out there (Peenis? Really?), but in general I prefer portmanteaus to the fandoms where you need a cheat sheet to figure out what all the ship names mean (Roswell fandom was like that).

Most of them just sound so damn cutesy, which is really not appropriate for many pairings.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-26 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
I seriously don't get why some people are so butthurt about portmanteaus. It's convenient. Get over it.

It makes fandom stuff so much easier and it's quicker to write out a portmanteau then type character x character, especially since portmanteaus are 100% effective for tagging purposes.
