+1

I also have a thing for people being unaware that they're behaving more initimately than an outsider expects and being all "What?" about it. Especially when it involves sharing food (taking the bits you know they don't like off their plate and exchanging them for something they do) or clothes.

Re: Oh you, Tumblr.

Yeah.

Still distressing, in terms of a poor grasp of the issues involved, but not nearly as angermaking as it had been described. "OMG did you realize that Adolf Hitler was... a human being???" Or denying the existence of evil.

Well, yes, of course he was. And it is important to seek comprehension, understanding, of the reality of historical issues. But the route to that understanding is not having your mind blown by the revelation that there were reasons for what Hitler did, or attempts to redeem him. Of course there were - he was a human being. But he was evil, because of the choices which he, as a human being, made - because of the things that he did, even thinking they were good. The fact that he thought they were good choices does not make them understandable; the fact that he might have thought it for the good of the country does not make it noble. The fact is that he was a human being, and it is for that reason that we are justified in judging him.

So fuck Hitler. He was a human being, and fuck him.

It's more depressing, I guess, that the common presentation of WWII and Hitler in schools (mostly American schools) is so simplistic that it comes as a revelation that Hitler wasn't snorting powdered dead baby 24/7.

I love the cooperative practice of going to the toilet with a friend so we can appreciate our each other's asses and gossip while we're fixing our make up.

I fucking hate co-op games.

Re: How to make fandom friends.

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2012-11-28 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
Basically this. My best friend today, I met by randomly replying to an RP request on a comm, just me happening to pick her post to reply to, her getting back to me, and us talking long enough to see we were insanely compatible. Any number of things could have kept it from happening or had it fizzle out, and I could reply to a hundred RP requests and never replicate that success. Shit happens.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-28 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the opposite, I'm a girl and I much prefer competitive games over cooperative ones because I hate being reliant on anyone else to be able to win or succeed. If I win, I want it to be through my own abilities, not someone else's.

Not sure if that was general or directed at me so to clarify I completely agree with what you just said. I think, if anything, upon the realization Hitler was human people should be more disgusted and angered by what he did.

If you think following the law and being polite insulates you from bad customer service, boy are you in for a shock...

Rather it hadn't, thanks.

BBC Sherlock has only the most tenuous relationship to the real thing. ACD fans represent!

I'm not mad keen on Baring-Gould either tbh. Didn't he start or at least popularise the silly Holmes/Adler/Nero Wolfe rumour?

I second the rec of "The Doctor's Wife" if you're having trouble mentally linking him to the Doctor lineup.

First of all, it's a just plain amazing ep and pretty much standalone, and second of all, I don't know how to explain it, but you know how with all the Doctors, there's a "Doctor" aspect that remains pretty much unchanged throughout all the incarnations, and a "Number" aspect that's unique and specific to individual incarnations? The two blend really well in that ep, because the Eleven voice and manner is wonderfully strong and enjoyable in the dialogue and the execution of the episode, but the content of the episode focuses so heavily on the Doctor's history: the Time War and the other dead Time Lords and the TARDIS and his origin story and the journey he's been on since before the very first episode ever aired, that the story itself is not Eleven-specific. So it really, really gives a great sense of continuity without being about recent specific plot points.

Coming from someone who is currently writing some beastiality-type fics for disney_kink, as long as it's just fantasy, well, no harm no foul. Btw, do you have any useful links or tips regarding research? I'm writing one that actually is a human/dog pairing and just seem to be running into some blocks regarding certain aspects.

If two characters are reaching out their hands to each other and can't touch for whatever reason, it makes my heart hurt. Every time I see the ending of Wrath of Khan and the part where Kirk says in Search for Spock, "We were separated. He couldn't touch me," I just wanna hug him.

Also, that thing you mentioned where people touch foreheads, but don't kiss. TV Tropes calls it the Headbutt of Love and it's just so incredibly close and cute.

Supernatural, waaaay back in the day. It was the first season finale. I was on the edge of my seat, Sam talking in the car, and BAM! They get it. I didn't even have time to say "Holy shit" before the episode was over.

Methuselah's death in the first Redwall book was a big one for me as a kid. It was the first book series I read where actions had very real consequences and sometimes people died without deserving it. To have a little old grandpa-age mouse die in a very cruel and unwarranted manner shocked me to my ten year old core. I just stared at the page, begging the little old mouse to please get up.

Lastly, Cher's death in Wolf's Rain. I know everyone gets upset over Toboe's, but Cher was so unexpected for me. Especially because of the slow-mo shot of her face as the jeep falls off the cliff. She, and the audience, has just enough to to process and realize that she is about to die before time speeds back up and the jeep keeps on falling. After that, I knew all bets were off, and other characters were probably gonna die.

There's something incredibly satisfying about comboing in DMC, and the gameplay just looks so nice, I totally agree on that front :D

I love watching puzzle games, but get too easily frustrated with them to play myself. Hell, I still get angry at Shadow of the Colossus, even though I know the method for killing each Colossi off by heart now.

Susan Boyle was being interviewed on the radio a few weeks ago, and listening to the DJ trying to talk about how the whole country was shocked she could sing when she was, you know, a bit <smallunattractive made me feel really uncomfortable. I suppose the (only) good thing about these shows is that people like her apply, get through the pre-auditions, probably because the producers think it'll be entertaining, then get enough public recognition that they can get a career out of it. I can't imagine that these days many record companies would have signed her up on the basis of a demo. They'd have looked at her and deemed her unmarketable.

Gotta disagree with you there, OP, I'm alone, but being without fandom was much worse. All those shows about the power of friendship, man. At least in fandom, I can make brief connections with people, even if they don't go anywhere, and see real people make connections with each other over the stuff I like, so I know it's possible. Watching movies or television alone, all I've got is me and people who don't exist. Much lonelier.

Speaking for myself, I get really competitive with some games, but I do sometimes worry that it's born out of a need to prove myself to be as good as the guys (being of a womanly persuasion as I am). I wonder whether I'd be anywhere near as competitive if it wasn't for that sexism with gaming in the first place.

Bit of a random reply, but your comment made me think. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-28 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
:(

Virtual hugs for you, OP.

I ..wish I knew what I was doing right, because I seem to have way too many fandom friends (who sadly all live ridiculously far away so meeting them in real life tends to be a problem). I was thinking about the ones who've stayed behind, and become closer friends, and realized that really it all comes down to relating something non-fandomy to them. We talk about our lives, our annoyances, our relationship woes, politics.. We just relate about other things than fandom, so even when I leave behind fandom, I no longer think about X fandom friend as "that girl from the UK who loves A/B pairing", but as "that girl from the UK who loves A/B pairing, and is very left-wing, and passionate about history".

Of course, there's still some people who I don't mind losing touch with, simply because we didn't talk that much, and I understand some people want to be very private with their interactions online. It also helps that for the most part, my preferences in fandoms, even when small, tend to be shared by others who like the canon.

I'll also say this: other people's friendships may appear wonderful and ever-lasting from the outside looking in, but I've also had some experiences where fandom friendships have been fraught with unpleasant drama and weirdness.

I'll stop rambling now..
