I watched one episode of that show for a particular guest star and found it to be the most incredibly boring thing ever. I always assumed I just got unlucky and in was just a bad episode but after reading your secret... maybe not? I know it had a big fandom, though.

Let me guess. The one with Mark Pellegrino being beautifully horrible by playing Mark Pellegrino in TV Guest Spots As Whacky Villains as usual?

I will guess that some of the continuing popularity might be due to Minotaur?

May Minotaur rest in peace.

The fic was always better than the writing. Though I disagree with you on the guys' attractiveness factor. (Except I wish whoever was doing the hair knew how to manage long curly hair -- from s3 onwards Blair's hair looked like he hadn't washed it in weeks. Yeuch.)

Normally I'd say your full of shit but... for sentinel... okay maybe.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-28 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I watched about four or five episodes and then gave up. The fandom was much better than the show from what I saw.

No.

Captain Simon Banks taking his jacket off was the highlight of that show for me, and Blair's hair is amazing in motion. That still-image does not do it justice >:U

Ok. i'm just kidding. About most of that.
Oh wait. No. I'm not kidding. I totally relate to you though, and also got into the show via crossover/fusion fic haha. Granted, the only reason I decided to watch it was because of some of the awesome zine covers I saw on the fanlore entry for it. But seriously, the actual show is so campy and stupid fun I can't believe it even had a fandom haaahhaha :')

The series was fun while it lasted, but I think it didn't age well.

That being said, I still think Garett Maggart is cute as hell.

I haven't seen the show because I had misgivings about it. Good to know my hunch had some basis.

However, their bloopers were funny.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-29 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I had the same problem. A friend gave me old zines and there were crossovers for tv shows I had never seen. Since I didn't know any of the series it was all like original fiction to me. I finally watched two of the series in reruns, Stargate and Magnificent Seven, and I loved them both, but after seeing how different everybody was on the shows I judged the zines as poor quality. I was still excited to see Sentinel, hoping I'd like the canon more than the fiction too but it wasn't out on dvd. I finally watched it on con tapes and I was so disappointed! Everybody was different from the zines again, but instead of liking the characters more like the other shows, I hated everybody. The guys weren't anything like the ones in the zines, and the writing was so bad. I'm sorry I watched Sentinel. I couldn't read the fanfic after that.

I've never understood the appeal of this show. I watched it as a young teen when it was new, and lasted maybe half a season. As an adult, I am perennially surprised at how fic for it dominates my two favorite reccing coms.

But hey, if everyone liked the same things, the world would be boring. *shrug*

I haven't watched any of the show, but I remember running across pictures of the characters and having the same reaction. YMMV on attractiveness, but Blair especially doesn't do it for me.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-29 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I find Blair kinda tolerable if he's wearing glasses and has his hair tied back.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-29 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think Richard Burgi can be weirdly charismatic. That said, I only got through fifteen minutes of one episode and had to change the channel and this is coming from a fan of One West Waikiki. But The Sentinel, however, poorly executed, has an interesting premise and that can often spark people's imaginations like nothing else.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-29 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think the show was terribly written and the acting not much better. I start cringing and/or rolling my eyes like - ten minutes into a Sentinel ep? The characterisation is also ridiculously inconsistent, and after a while the rehashing of the same old plots gets tiring.

But that said, I also think there's a lot of potential in the premise, and that's what created the fandom and keeps people interested in said fandom even today. The idea is fun; there's a lot you can do with it. That's what keep the ficcers going - for which I'm glad, because generally speaking, I think the fics're of better quality than the show itself.

Don't agree with you re: their attractiveness, though. I find them both attractive in different ways. YMMV, I guess, but I'm not surprised that a majority of fandom finds them good-looking.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-29 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it.

I was 6? with Sensory processing disorder and I loved that the tv had someone like me.

(I outgrow some of my disorders thou)

I watched it when the shows came out. Yeah, it's pure cheese and silly at that, especially the intro, damn did that date badly. And there are some serious LOL WTF moments, but maybe it's because I come from an era when guy on guy fanservice was never, ever done, but I saw a shitton of shipping material between them. I mean, seriously, Blair moves in episode 3 and never moves out again. They are constantly touching each other. Sure they don't actually kiss on screen (well except for the CPR bit) and they both have girlfriends, but they are totally married.

As for looks -- I find them both attractive so it wasn't a problem. Blair's sideburns got a little out of hand in some of the later seasons, but otherwise, I loved his puppy eyes and jew-fro.

[personal profile] mab_browne 2012-11-29 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. Fair enough that it didn't grab you. The show is pretty cheesy, and the actors, especially GM, aren't the ethereal beings of some fic. But the guys definitely did/do it for some fans, so I'll wave my little 'yay!JimandBlair' flag. Your mileage may vary, of course. :-)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-29 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of the same and opposite of you. I got into the show through fic after I noticed it was a buddy cop show with a huge fandom and main slash pairing, which is my fandom bread and butter so I was naturally onto that like white on rice. After enjoying the fic, I decided I would watch the show, and was disappointed, as you were. But that was only at first. About ten episodes in I started finding Richard Burgi and Garrett Maggart increasingly attractive in a way that I can only describe as stockholm syndrome. And while the show is admittedly incredibly bad, having seen a lot of bad tv in the name of fandom in my time I was able to appreciate the few funny/sweet/poignant/bordering on well written moments the show has even more keenly (just don't make me name any off the top of my head). Plus, I'm a trooper, so I gritted my teeth and got back into the fic.

So, yeah. I see where you're coming from. Maybe give the fic another try though, now you know what you're in for, and see how it goes. It doesn't have a disproportionately huge fandom for nothing, after all. Personally, after a few years of finding myself repeatedly returning to the comforting familiarity of Jim/Blair when I'd left so many other fandoms by the wayside, I suddenly realised The Sentinel, in all it's I'm-embarrassed-I-even-remember-this-shitfest-existed-let-alone-actively-enjoy-it glory had somehow become my favourite fandom.

I mean, J/B as a pairing has everything: ill-matched buddy cop crime-fighting, magical powers, potential for canonically compliant soul bonding, potential for canonically compliant territorial instinct/pheremones made them do it, spirit animals, resurrection-through-the-power-of-loooove, military drama, university politics, police politics, academic/cop/hippie/ex-military-unlikely-love-pairing-yay!, mommy issues, daddy issues, repressed childhood memory issues, repressed PTSD-y issues, shamans... and that's not even starting on the bajillion AUs, or even the occasionally amusing side characters. It's not all bad, by a long shot.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-29 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I can still read the fic, actually, that's not a problem, and the premise did have potential. The execution was just so. Bad.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-29 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man. This show was my gateway drug into fandom. Mainly, I think because the premise was awesome and the execution was so terrible. I have seriously fond memories of using the computer at the library after school to print Kristine William's fic, ten pages at a time so that I didn't have to pay. All the while praying that the librarian (who was my best friend's mother) wouldn't glance at what I was printing.

I was on quite a streak for a while of shows that were flawed, but talked to me. Mag 7, The Sentinel, seaQuest... Those plot holes and unused potential are what got me to start writing.

tl;dr - Yay for nostalgia!

I've never seen this show, but it sounds like the fiction written about it is above and beyond what it deserves. :-)

I thought it was just me; I hated this show when I saw it, and I felt so bad because the friend that showed it to me really wanted me to like it. But it was just terribly executed. (FWIW, I wasn't fond of the premise either, which just made things worse...)
