sorry I have a lot of feelings on this
(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 01:23 am (UTC)(link)...and well I honestly have to say having seen some of tumblr's social justice movement I agree.
Don't get me wrong I'm someone who supports the idea of bringing awareness to bigotry and ignorance wholeheartedly, who despises slut shaming and bullying/harassment of different orientations and genders. But raising awareness of issues and telling people they're just born oppressive monsters and there's nothing they can do about it are two completely different things.
I don't think the OP came off stuck up and trying to play the 'pity me I'm more oppressed than you' (because believe me I have seen secrets like that before, the "I'm sorry I'm normal" variety for example. OP didn't refer to themselves as "normal" at all just acknowledging that she is straight/cis-which is you know and actual orientation/identity.) I think they're just tired of being told they're just inherently evil.
There's a lot of difference between Social Justice Allys and Social Justice Warriors. Ally's are standing up for a cause, Warriors are attacking for it. (I may be getting this wrong but this is my perception). There's no need to tear someone else down to bring their own side up and it does nothing but start and endless seesaw of tearing down. Yes there are people out there whose lives are more difficult than the person you're mad at ....but is telling that person they're scum going to do anything to change the plight of the less privileged? Why not go after the people who try to pass laws that hurt people like protesting a pending bill in Uganda to legalize killing LGBT people and AIDs victims or spending anger on a person who is actively bigoted rather than wishing suicide murder and rape on a person who made a mistake out of ignorance? supporting a good cause is not a free pass to do and say anything you want from harassing and dogpiling to passing out personal information of people you're angry at. If you're an unpleasant hateful person who viciously bullies people, it doesn't matter so much what you support, you're still an unpleasant hateful person who bullies people.
For example , callouts. SJWs say they don't have to be 'nice' about calling people out. Yes I suppose that's true especially if someone is being awful. But they shouldn't be abusing that by yelling at everyone who has a different perspective and saying its a callout. If you respond to someone with assertiveness and basic civility (you can be civil while being assertive people) you'll come out the more reasonable person. At best you might even succeed in making them see that they were ignorant and misinformed and genuinely change their mind. Screaming at them to die is not only uncalled for it also makes you look irrational. Sometimes you can do your best but you can't change people(and you certainly won't by threatening their lives) you can only inform them. Your choices are yours and theirs are theirs. If they have done wrong then they will reap consequences in due time.
Telling someone that their problems aren't real problems and that they have no right to complain while you do is 98% of cases a shitty hypocritical thing to do. mocking them about it in a passive aggressive manner ("white tears") is even worse. If you expect people to take your woes seriously and listen when you routinely tell them "oh boo hoo tragic ____ tears. your life must be so haaaaard." then I'm sorry but you are probably going to be disappointed -and not because they are bigoted.
Social Justice is good. Bringing awareness to bigotry is wonderful. There's nothing wrong with social justice or fighting bigotry. ...just don't become the monster you fight
tl;dr: Social justice is okay. SJWs are doin' it wrong and OP just might have a good reason to be upset
Re: sorry I have a lot of feelings on this
(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 01:37 am (UTC)(link)I with SJW would get a different name because Social Justice is a Good Thing and a lot of the things SJW take over and words they use wrong are actually helpful and good words and it's to the point where you can't mention privelege or sexism or racial anything without being jumped on and called a SJW - no matter how or what you're talking about. We should just call them Bullies. Or Tumblr Idiots. Or something other than SJW because they're really ruining the Social Justice part. :(
Re: sorry I have a lot of feelings on this
(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 02:16 am (UTC)(link)I agree. Because really at this point they're ruining social justice because people hear Social justice and think of this behavior. I have to admit I know cringe when I hear 'privilege'. (It's really weird because my dad will be talking about x is privilege and I'll be like "*hiss* I hate that word" ) People need to talk about these issues, but now everyone's too scared too because they have to worry about getting a million hate messages.
I don't like the way they've totally devalued trigger warnings by taking something that was for actual PTSD victims and making into something that bubbles wraps the internet for them so they don't have to look at so much as an opinion they disagree with. If anything is an example of 'harmful appropriating' (which is something they talk about regularly ) it would be that. It's like they stabbed the people they claim to be helping in the back for their own personal selfishness :/
(Also sort of related because of the tumblr vegans (and PETA who are worse because they're hypocrites doing it for money) people look at vegans and vegetarians and expect them to be like that. I had a classmate/coworker who was really ignorant and honestly believed stuff like "vegetarians believe feeding children meat is child abuse" it sounded ridiculous back then, but now it's like the tumblr vegans are proving him right. I understand worrying about animal rights but there's no need to proclaim everyone who doesn't have the same dietary beliefs as you is the devil. :/)
Re: sorry I have a lot of feelings on this
PETA are actually extremists. They act on their crazy bullshit, to the detriment of all. Including, ironically, goddamn animals.
Re: sorry I have a lot of feelings on this
(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 03:12 am (UTC)(link)(though I was weirded out to find that they funded porn. Smex drive for the animals, huh?)
Re: sorry I have a lot of feelings on this
...Basically, fuck PETA.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-07 06:28 am (UTC)(link)Re: sorry I have a lot of feelings on this
..Yeah, I don't think they know what "appropriation" means.

Re: sorry I have a lot of feelings on this
(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 03:58 am (UTC)(link)SJWs really are damaging everything they touch. Anger is one hell of a drug and they are addicted to it, hardcore.

Re: sorry I have a lot of feelings on this
(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 05:01 am (UTC)(link)This is why I hate the "poor menz" meme so goddamn much. It just makes you look like a dickbag and lets me know right off the bat that you're never going to listen to my non-misandrist thoughts (and I'm not a dude).
Re: sorry I have a lot of feelings on this
(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)They go around trying to give everything from suicide to daisies a trigger warning, yet their most favoured insult is "go kill lyourself".

and at that point "let them vent" is no longer an excuse if SJWs are hurting others who need a place to vent. A cis/straight/white person is probably not hurting anybody or being bigoted by dealing with their own personal depression feelings over tumblr so there's no reason they shouldn't have aright to do it because of their sexuality/race.
Re: sorry I have a lot of feelings on this
I remember actually being messaged on my private journal by a SJW once telling me that my best friend's suicide was my own fault because I was such a horrible person, and that I should kill myself too. Like, do you really think that doing things like that is going to help your cause?
Additionally, mental illness can affect ANYBODY, regardless of gender, race, or sexuality.
Re: sorry I have a lot of feelings on this
...supporting a good cause is not a free pass to do and say anything you want from harassing and dogpiling to passing out personal information of people you're angry at.
You do not get to bully, harass, stalk, or minimize the issues of people who YOU think are assholes. Being an asshole to an asshole just because you think you're defending a good cause does not make you NOT an asshole. You do not have the right to bully somebody because you don't like them, or else you're just as bad as you think they are.
