Can't. If you have poor implementation, you''ll see some real disconnect problems during the game that will just regulate it to another failure.

Wanting it is fine, but you gotta want it done well. Settling will get you crap that will turn others off.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-12-11 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
At this point I don't care. Make a female model, change pronouns to match, there you go. That's all I want.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Mass Effect basically did this. In many ways, the female character is better than the male because of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Along with that I think Jennifer Hale is the better voice actor of the two. I know a couple of people who play as Femshep because they just like her voice better.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I know a lot of guys who prefer to play the female character because they rather look at a woman.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha no.

Female characters are not that fucking hard to create and implement into a narrative. Literally all you have to do is write a normal character and then make them a woman. That's it. That's all. That's all that any of us want. Make a good character, which plenty of writers have PROVEN THEMSELVES ABLE TO DO, and don't shove her into stereotypical "the girl" roles. That. Is. It.

Don't even pull this "but but but writing women is haaaaaaard" bullshit, it's just another sexist excuse the industry uses to pretend like they aren't full of shit.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think you misunderstood insanenoodlyguy's comment (or I misunderstood him and I'm making a fool of myself, in which case D:).

I think he meant that if the game bombs for other reasons (like bad writing), gamer dude bros will blame it on the female protagonist, so the game has to be as close to perfect as it can so that female protagonists become more common.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
the way I understood it he meant implementation as in implementing an option for female leads.

If which case they would actively have to try to screw it up, because it's not that hard.

That wasn't what I was saying, but this is also a very good point. The game itself has to be good or it's all moot anyway. Though that can be said of any game ever.

Writing a woman is not hard.

Writing the game to accomodate both versions can get a bit harder though. Depends on the game genre and scope.

It's not necessarily as easy as changing pronouns with some games. And if it's done bad, the people who wanted it will hate it more then anything.

i think folks might be forgetting how much of a time crunch designers are on throughout most of the designing process. in bioshock 2, the original intent was to have one little sister have blonde hair. there were audio diaries alluding to it and everything. they ran out of time to do that one tiny little thing, and so she had brown hair like the others.

like you said, the type of game - plot and all - really does matter when making multiple versions of a playable character, and it's not always possible to do it well for every game on the market in a timely fashion. and like you also said, people do call offending games out for being sloppy all the time.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-12-11 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, a lot of the time I see people calling games out for sloppy female protagonists it's because they did change the gameplay and story instead of just switching pronouns.

[personal profile] saku 2012-12-11 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
i think that depends entirely on the game, it's kind of a case-by-case thing. i think we can all agree that the industry is shit at doing it right though.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
yet the first character, the default dummy we end up being stuck with because they don't have time to make a second gender model, is always male. Why? because male is always the default. joy oh joy.

i don't know why this surprises you, really

"Writing the game to accomodate both versions can get a bit harder though."

No it's not. There's actual examples of this exact thing which prove this statement wrong. Mass Effect is the same game, same story no matter which character you choose, the only exception being possible love interests.

They would actually have to TRY to fuck it up. Like, say, the Tomb Raider rape backstory thing. That is a perfect example of what you're talking about, because it's insensitive, bad storytelling, and incredibly sexist. If game creators stop viewing female characters as strange, weak and foreign creatures and start treating them like actual characters, there would be no problems.

Exactly. Mass Effect. Dragon Age.

It can be done and it can be wildly popular.

I've played ManShep and FemShep, and FemShep is SO MUCH COOLER.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-12-11 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
And do you know how much extra work was put into mass effect to make that work? It was well done, but it wasn't simple. It was lots and lots of code.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
But why is it considered "extra work" to put in female characters? Instead of having this male-first mentality, shouldn't game creators just plan on making games for both?

I really like this comment a lot. It reminds me of one of the many reasons I involve myself in fandom. Y'all make me realize I'm not alone in these thoughts.

I feel your frustration, anonoodles.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really trying to understand your position but I'm failing.

you're making the assumption that the secret op doesn't care about quality. where did you get that assumption? if the game is well done and sells well, then male or female choices, by your reasoning won't matter. cool.

but nowhere did the secret say AND I DON'T CARE IF THE GAME SUCKS ASS OR NOT GIMME MORE WIMMINS?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's a bit of a poorly laid out secret, check the line of text just above the Assassins creed title.
