I think you're kind of confusing an symptom for a cause. I don't think that canon kids turn things bad, so much as that kids tend to show up in canon when things turn bad - they turn up when the premise is worn out, and the writers have no way to go, and the tension and the drama and the premises that made the show interesting in the first place have been worn out, or are gone. So I don't think kids are the problem per se.

Kid characters don't make shows bad, bad writers do.

I mostly agree with this, but sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. Like, little Ramses killed the Amelia Peabody books for me. Killed 'em deader than the Pharaohs. And I don't know if that was because of the kid, himself, or because Elizabeth Peters was out of fresh ideas and thought the kid would help.
