I think Lily and Marshall are doing all right on HIMYM. I'm trying to think of other shows where they suddenly had kids but the only thing I'm coming up with is Full House when Jesse and Aunt Becky had the twins and...yeah, that just doesn't count for so many reasons.

Lily, Marshall, and Marvin are basically the only good bits left on HIMYM.

Although since this is fandom secrets and we bare our shame for all to see, I will admit that I adored that episode after the twins are born that has the black and white music video John Stamos and Lori Loughlin do with the babies. I would cross my fingers for a re-run of that ep as a kid. LOL

I think you're kind of confusing an symptom for a cause. I don't think that canon kids turn things bad, so much as that kids tend to show up in canon when things turn bad - they turn up when the premise is worn out, and the writers have no way to go, and the tension and the drama and the premises that made the show interesting in the first place have been worn out, or are gone. So I don't think kids are the problem per se.

Kid characters don't make shows bad, bad writers do.

I mostly agree with this, but sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. Like, little Ramses killed the Amelia Peabody books for me. Killed 'em deader than the Pharaohs. And I don't know if that was because of the kid, himself, or because Elizabeth Peters was out of fresh ideas and thought the kid would help.

Rainicorn is having babies with Jake. I wonder if the show will go downhill?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's the babies themselves that ruin stories, more that it's writers who haven't come up with a competent way to do a baby storyline without ruining the show/film/book/whatever. I still believe it can be done.

I'm bewildered by the phenomenon myself. I don't mind if it's in fanfic--I've written babyfic before. But when I go to TV blogs and see people freak out over pregnancy spoilers, I'm lost.

I get even more creeped out when people suggest pregnancy/babies can fix a storyline. That's not how parenthood works, fandoms.

well...to be fair, there are an awful lot of women out there who believe that a baby will fix their IRL marriage/relationship, too.

Agreed so much OP, I HATE it when they get to the kids appearing. I guess the only series where I didn't mind that was .... MAYBE Dragonball and DBZ, but that series wasn't really one I go into the fandom for.

But yeah, ugh. I hate when my favorite characters have kids and settle down.

NGL, even though I'm an enormous Ryan/Esposito fan, I'm really kind of stoked at the idea of Ryan/Jenny having adorable Irish babies on Castle. Of course, he's not the lead and she's only been on a handful of times, so it's unlikely their having a kid would take over the show.

I don't think babies themselves are the problem. I think the real problem is writers don't know how to actually write babies.

Hate babies in canon. I think they did it right on Angel: Plot requires a baby for some reason? Quick, ship it off to a hell dimension before it totally ruins the show.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in agreement with other opinions that when a baby storyline appears it's because the writers can't come up with anything new, not that the appearance of the baby portends the decline of the show.

Not horrible, I agree. Once a child is in the mix, then that's the parents' life. It's a change that's too huge in a character's life for many to be able to take in.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
you know, there are some of us out here in the world that really aren't interested in watching adults coo over children. we don't find it fascinating or riveting or even very interesting.

having to talk to someone who's a new parent is about as exciting as talking to a lamp post.

Amen. Babyfic can be cute, but most of the time it ruins canon. I don't mind characters on shows having older kids, who actually have a personality and all that (Castle's daughter is AWESOME, for example), but babies are just fucking boring. And all the baby storylines on all the shows out there are always the same.

Hmm. As many other people have pointed out I don't think it's baby stories that kill shows. I think baby stories are a last ditch, sloppy, lazy effort to save shows that are already spinning down the drain.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
100% agree. Don't like babies to begin with and hate when they become THE plotline. It was the nail in the coffin for me and Bones. Ugh. I detest that every woman on tv must have a change of heart and love the babbiieess if she get`s pregnant or runs across one in the show. The only baby that hasn`t ruined a show for me so far, is in Walking Dead. And it`s still in the early days yet. Don`t like babies in fanfic either. Mpreg literally turns my stomach.

I really hate the inevitable baby / pregnancy / "LET'S HAVE CHILDRANZ!!" part of plot progression when a couple exists.
It's like it's some kind of requirement for being a couple.
You're serious / married? When can we expect the first baby?
Oh my god, FUCK OFF.

I definitely support more non-procreating serious couples, or even ones that have abortions. People can enjoy their lives and their relationships without spawning.
