Who else is over Christmas?

[personal profile] mekkio 2012-12-11 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like I am the only one who wishes Christmas would go back to its religious roots and become a single day of holy observation with maybe some gift exchanging. Because if I have to listen to one more muzak Christmas tune being played over head in every store or have someone yell at me, "Hurry, you only have so many shopping days!" or have one of my shows do a cheesy, eye rolling very Christmas episode, I am going to ring a reindeer's neck.

And this is coming from a Catholic.

I walked into a Whole Foods today and instead of Christmas music playing, they had KISS playing. Don't even like KISS but I wanted to have the babies of who ever set that store's music out of appreciation.

Yeah I'm realllllllly getting sick already of Christmas commercials. And Christmas movies. and Christmas music. And the Christmas furor that now overtakes the entirety of American culture for the entire month of December. It's the omnipresence that bothers me - everything must be Christmas, every TV show must air Christmas episodes, every movie on TV must be a Christmas movie, every store must do Christmas things, it's Christmas all the time and it's still two weeks away.

Why can't it be more like Thanksgiving? I like Thanksgiving. It's great. It's autumnal, and you eat a ton of food, and you watch football, and you hang out with your family, and it lasts a day, and there's no omnipresent advertisements for it. Why can't we have that for Christmas gol dangit

It's Christmas beginning in October, but that's because I work in retail. Still, I get sick of it pretty early on.

This is your fault! You keep the ratings and the Billboard numbers high!

Think of us, poor Christians who are sick of Christmas!

Hah, I was just thinking about how I'm really not feeling Christmas this year. Normally I'm ok with it, although I'm not super-invested or anything, but this year I wouldn't mind if I could just fast-forward to December 28th or something.

Yeah. Christmas used to be a trigger for me, so I completely agree. When you are trying to avoid All-Encompassing Christmas because it sends you into panic attacks, you REALLY realize it's EVERYWHERE, holy fuck.

I love the whole Christmas season (one it's December 1st, that is; before then, I'm in grinch mode)! This may be because I don't see the Christmas ads or hear the muzak too often. Hell, I even like the awful Christmas covers, because I think it's hilarious at just how bad some of them are. It's worth it for the light displays.

And this is coming from an atheist.

I've been over Christmas for years and have fully embraced my Grinchitude. Doesn't help that I'm unemployed this year and it's just making me feel worse about it.

Anything else, I can successfully ignore (now that I don't work in retail; I have 100% sympathy for any retail workers who hate Christmas).

The only thing I like about the season are the lights. Everything else, from the crappy Christmas covers playing in every store to the aggressive commercialization, can go die in a fire. It's fine as a kid because it means no school and presents, but as an adult, it's just sort of sickening :|

For me, it depends on the year. Throughout college, I was sooooo excited for Christmas. I'd decorate my apartment, then go home and decorate the whole house, bake dozens and dozens of cookies, and just be generally merry.

Then I started working full time and Christmas is now just a nice mini vacation of me and movies at home. I tend to avoid going out except at the earliest or latest hours, so I avoid the overcraziness of Christmas.

I love Christmas and everything to do with it, from the constant music in the stores to the lame specials on TV.

That being said, I wish the hype wouldn't start until after the beginning December. By the time Christmas actually rolls around, it's lost half it's charm.

There's only 3 things I want for Christmas this year.

1) to turn 23, not 30
2) my grandpa back
3) the new Batman movie

Other than that I don't give a damn anymore.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I HATE christmas, and I'm also christian (sort of). I've learned to loathe it over the years because everything is so phony, any "meaning" has become meaningless.

I just keep it to myself unless I find a kindred spirit like you, because otherwise I get dogpiled with "omg how could you not like christmas?" and other trite platitudes about how I just need to get in the spirit and all traditions are good and blah blah blah. No, fuck you and go to hell, I don't want to have all these forced trappings of sentimentality thrown on me for two months every year. And don't even get me started on how charity seems to only apply at christmas when people are starving, homeless, and in terrible straits 365 days of the year.

Actually, to some extent, the crazy constant Christmas music playing way too loud is an effort to overload the senses in order to make you buy more. No, really.

As someone who's worked retail for way too long, I was way over Christmas years ago. I'm still not in the shopping mood at this point in the month (maybe tomorrow), and I was over Christmas music the first day I heard any.

Don't get me wrong, I like some aspects of it, like actually GIVING gifts (even if the shopping part sucks), and ODing on peppermint mochas at Starbucks. But for the most part, I'd rather ff to the 26th.

I'm not over Christmas per se - I love the holiday - but I am SO over the hyper-commercialization and all the ads and materialism. Like, I've been over that for AGES. >:C

I'm not over Christmas music this year, but them I also don't have enough money this year to buy Christmas presents for people so I haven't been visiting malls and such. :(

We have the tree up now though. :D It makes me happy. And chocolates make me happy. And spending time with family makes me happy. That's the way I see Christmas.

My parents used to meld my birthday with Christmas, so for seventeen years I didn't get a birthday party, or anything special on my birthday other than a card from my sister and maybe some of my friends. My birthday is December 11th. Can anyone spot why I'd be so over Christmas I would have never liked it in the first place?

I tell people I don't celebrate because I'm not Christian, but really it just gives me shitty memories. All the music does is remind me. Even now that I'm with people who do acknowledge and celebrate my birthday, it just bugs me.

I was thinking this just today. I work retail, and I am just so sick of all the stuff coming through. And I kind of really suck at gift giving. I don't think it's because I'm just selfish, because getting gifts makes me kind of uncomfortable too. I just want to skip it all.

I work in retail. I've been over Christmas since September (we put Christmas out REALLY early).

What if I want it to go back to it's pre-Reformation roots where it was a 12 day festival from Christmas to Twelfth Night/Epiphany full of raucous merriment where the class system was allowed to be turned on its ass?

I'd trade this Sept-Dec glut of commercialism for the old fashioned 12 day romp any day.

I'm over it because I just don't care and don't really celebrate. I wouldn't mind if it was over a few days and the decorations/music for a couple of weeks...but the music and decorations go up in november and I CAN'T ESCAPE IT. It's everywhere! Even in the park! Granted it's all pretty much the secular version, but it's still way too much y'know?
(I'm quite happy with just putting up a little tree and little santa hats on the dogs)

Way way too much.

Also I hate fretting over what to buy people and all the money to spend on presents. Because the alternative is people being frowny and annoyed with me.

I enjoyed Christmas as a kid, but these days I don't really celebrate it and yes, I find the hype a bit annoying. I don't mind people actually enjoying/celebrating Christmas, but as I get older, I'm very cynical about the commercialism of the holiday. Retail keeps starting the Christmas season earlier and earlier.

I'm not too fond of Christmas music to begin with, and working in retail, I've gotten really sick of it. They play the same songs over and over again! And all the different covers either sound the same, or people try to make theirs different in ways that don't work at all.
