The latter is worse than the former because homosexual and bisexual characters are SEVERELY underrepresented in media in general. There is no shortage of straight people, so writing a fic where one or two of them are actually gay/bi is not hurting anyone. As a minority, every representation of an honestly gay character is a victory, and erasing that is bad.

Think of it this way, you wouldn't re-write a black character to be white so you could pair them up with the white chick/dude. It's not a perfect comparison, but it isn't completely inaccurate either. Erasing a minority character, while there may not be any bigoted motivations behind it, can certainly come off as bigoted. Comparing it to non-con is bad and stupid, but yeah, doesn't make the act of straightening a character less bad and stupid if the comparison is faulty.

Not to mention characters who are assumed by fans to be straight are just characters whose sexuality has never been mentioned who happened to be shown with someone of the opposite gender. So it's perfectly reasonable to assume some of them might be bisexual.
