Context, my dear anon, context.

(Not to say that the former activity is great - it's probably not the best - but still)

Because homosexuals have faced real-world "corrections" that include torture in attempts to make them straight. Meanwhile, straight people are a majority and are rarely even inconvenienced by their sexuality outside of, "Baaaawww, he/she doesn't like me!!!!"

You aren't tortured, you don't have your heads bashed in with baseball bats, you don't get correctively raped just for being straight.

It's people who (apparently only in this regard) can't separate fiction from reality and think writing a fanfic where a gay character is straight is essentially the same as walking up to a gay person and punching them in the face until they "turn straight."

But feel to free make the fandom darling a child molester! Or a canon bad guy a sweet, misunderstood woobie! Or violently rape a fuckton of women! Because that's just fiction and fantasy, don't you know! Whereas, wanting to see one hot, gay fictional character hook up with an opposite-sex hot fictional character is disrespectful verging on ~*dangerous~*.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
...if you honestly (by which I meant you aren't being a troll) can't understand why turning a gay/lesbian character straight is going to be a more controversial thing that turning a straight character gay/lesbian then I suggest you try reading a few more real life stories of gay/lesbian people having horrific things done to them to be "turned straight" (or rather, being forced to repress their true feelings and act straight).

The latter is worse than the former because homosexual and bisexual characters are SEVERELY underrepresented in media in general. There is no shortage of straight people, so writing a fic where one or two of them are actually gay/bi is not hurting anyone. As a minority, every representation of an honestly gay character is a victory, and erasing that is bad.

Think of it this way, you wouldn't re-write a black character to be white so you could pair them up with the white chick/dude. It's not a perfect comparison, but it isn't completely inaccurate either. Erasing a minority character, while there may not be any bigoted motivations behind it, can certainly come off as bigoted. Comparing it to non-con is bad and stupid, but yeah, doesn't make the act of straightening a character less bad and stupid if the comparison is faulty.

Not that I'm supporting people bashing others for not liking their slash ship, but as far as the other way around goes, it's a lot to do with representation. There are far more canonically straight characters than gay. Even if we combine all fandoms, there are appallingly few options for shipping canonically non-straight characters, so those of us that are interested in that pull from ostensibly "straight" characters (that is, characters who haven't "come out" or shown themselves to be not straight, because our heteronormative culture assumes that straight is the default, and heaven forfend if you imply that a character might be bisexual!). But people who want to ship straight pairings? Have so many more options without de-queerifying non-straight characters. There are too many unfortunate implications within doing so.

You know what? I'm going to skip the obvious criticism of this secret. That's covered.

How about this.

If you feel like you are being shamed for not writing a slash pairing, you are full of shit. So. Very. Full. Of. Shit. There is no significant movement in fandom to force anyone to write slash if they don't like it. Are there complaints? Yes, sure, whatever. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. But the culture of fandom does not shame people for writing het if they like het, or gen if they like gen.

What you have been shamed for, if you have been shamed, is he way you talk about how others write slash. Check out your tone here, and reflect a little.

Then consider the context of gays both in real life and fiction, and think a little before you try to play the victim again.

As long as it's handled well, I don't see much of a problem. I've personally written a canonically gay character as straight and didn't receive any whiplash for it. It wasn't for the sake of Fixing Things either; I just saw two characters who had interesting chemistry and thought they might look good together. It's what most of fandom is all about, I had always assumed.

So long as you don't preface it with something like "NOW I KNOW A/B IS CANON BUT HAHAHAHA, THAT'S SO UNREALISTIC, MY OTP IS SO MUCH BETTER", I think you'll be fine.

I'm gay and I really do understand the arguments commonly used against this but...it's fanfic. I ship characters based on their chemistry, not their sexual orientation in canon (Kurt/Rachel 5ever). Sorry.

I think a lot of it also depends on how it's done in the fic though. Like, if someone has kurt realize he isn't gay due to the magical powers of rachel's vagina? yeah...no. If they have him realize that maybe his sexuality was little more flexible than he initially thought? Sure, I can buy that. Hell, I've seen it happen in real life.

Now, if it was done in canon then yeah I would sideye it more. But it's just fanfic. A lot of the time, people just want two characters they think are pretty and have good interactions to be together. What's wrong with that? It's hardly the most bizarre thing I've seen done in fic

I don't get it. Never heard of such things, but that sounds like it might be interesting to do. I guess I've never come across a gay character that I've wanted to ship as straight before.

Still it should be ok. The character is is fictional afterall. If straight people can be depicted as gay why not the other way around? This majority rules business people are crying about has no relevance to the fictional world. There's no injustice being done, this is absolutely silly. Go back to your corners and fap to your pron of choice before you hurt yourselves.

all my fandoms non-con isn't shamed if it's labeled.

maybe you need to rethink if you're really being shamed or if you just feel weird about doing it because no one else is.

that said, considering all the heteronormativity in the world, why you'd want to straighten a gay character is beyond me but I seriously doubt you're suffering from the same degree of shame, ostracization and prejudice a gay person feels every day and maybe, just maybe, might want to have something of theirs that doesn't get 'fixed' like so many try to do in their real lifes.

just saying.

I don't know why, but I have fun in these kinds of arguments. Although, I think I might make a mistake de-anoning here and it'll probably bite me in the arse later.

Now, to put it simply (and it's been told a thousand times before)... there are just so few LGBT characters in same-sex relationships in canon that shipping them in het pairings just makes me cringe. I've made a couple of gay characters of my own and the thought of someone else putting them in a straight relationship kind of makes me go "...Hmm. Please don't do that."

But I can't stop you from indulging in that. I tend to stay away from fanfiction in general and so I just skip over these kinds of things. And I keep my cool by doing so. However, I've learnt the hard way not to shame people out for indulging in a simple fantasy such as this, so if you think I'm going to judge you for that, I'm not.

It's just that the concept of a character who has been canonically shown or stated to only experience and express same sex attraction to be put into a heterosexual romance rubs me the wrong way. And it rubs me the wrong way because there's a plethora of stories about heterosexual romances that are already out there. Anon here explains this well, in my opinion.

So I just don't actively seek it out. And like what the comments before mine stated, it's more controversial to turn a gay or lesbian character (again, I mean canonically a gay or lesbian character) straight since there's that stigma taking away one of the few representations of social minorities in these stories. At least in my opinion.

...Then again, it also depends on the character, how it's written... so I won't totally be put off, at least in regards to original fiction. I mean, I can get that the character is just either experimenting, still testing the boundaries of their sexuality, or of course, they're really bisexual. I get it. Personally, I just know whatever gay character I create, it'll be that much harder for me to see in a straight relationship than any one of my straight characters in a gay one...

SHIPPERS GONNA SHIP. ROCK ON, OP.
