but uh. We kinda...do?

In fanfiction?

I don't get it really, if the queer representation is already there in canon, why does shipping matter? Queer will always be the default for that character.

There's tons of slash fanfiction, even if it might still not be the majority in fandom (I wouldn't know, I guess there's no studies anyway), it's still a big noticable, VISIBLE portion. So why does the fandom need more queer representation in fanfiction?

In my opinion, it doesn't. It's the source material that needs to change, not whatever fairytales it's fans like to spin in their heads.

We need more representation in media. Heaven knows we have plenty in fanfic. I didn't say we needed the representation in fanfic. (More accurate/less stereotyped, but not more.)

It just bugs me because there isn't a lot in the media, and then taking what little there is and changing it is...annoying. I'm not going to get in anyone's face about it, it's just like this little bit of sand in my shoes that I can't shake out.

It's just that as much as I know the people might not be doing it for anything other than the same reasons as I do the reverse, it still feels a tiny bit like they're brushing off my identity. 'This character deserves to be in a het ship.' I know that's my issue, my sensitivity, and not any actual kind of erasure, but it's still my instinctive emotional reaction.

'This character deserves to be in a het ship.'

My sentiments exactly.

I think I can understand that better.
