I'm fine with writing...okay, see, here's where there's an issue. I don't read the characters I write in slash pairings as automatically straight just because they haven't indicated in canon. Some of them? I do read as gay or bi in canon. Not everyone I read fics for (since I read Harry Potter fic and that would require reading all the everyone as bi), but certainly all the ones I write for. I don't believe 'undefined in canon' automatically equals 'straight.'
Most of the time, when people say 'straight in canon' in the fandoms I write for, they actually mean 'undefined, but straight is obviously the default so they're straight.' I don't get uncomfortable when other people read undefined characters as straight, but it does bug me that it's the default.
So any character who explicitly is not the 'default?' That's great. And it's a little granule of uncomfortableness when people shift them to straight. They have plenty of straight characters, or people-assume-they're-straight characters. I do understand that they might see chemistry in a particular way with a het pairing, but I guess there's a difference between understanding and being entirely okay with it.
Basically, the implied heteronormativity bugs the hell out of me, and I don't want to be one of those 'we need representation!' queers but uh. We kinda...do?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 02:28 am (UTC)(link)In fanfiction?
I don't get it really, if the queer representation is already there in canon, why does shipping matter? Queer will always be the default for that character.
There's tons of slash fanfiction, even if it might still not be the majority in fandom (I wouldn't know, I guess there's no studies anyway), it's still a big noticable, VISIBLE portion. So why does the fandom need more queer representation in fanfiction?
In my opinion, it doesn't. It's the source material that needs to change, not whatever fairytales it's fans like to spin in their heads.

It just bugs me because there isn't a lot in the media, and then taking what little there is and changing it is...annoying. I'm not going to get in anyone's face about it, it's just like this little bit of sand in my shoes that I can't shake out.
It's just that as much as I know the people might not be doing it for anything other than the same reasons as I do the reverse, it still feels a tiny bit like they're brushing off my identity. 'This character deserves to be in a het ship.' I know that's my issue, my sensitivity, and not any actual kind of erasure, but it's still my instinctive emotional reaction.

'This character deserves to be in a het ship.'
My sentiments exactly.
