(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 01:22 am (UTC)(link)Do people still write het based fanfic anymore? That still exists?
Weird. o_O

As far as I know, it just depends on the fandom.

EDIT; And things like this, like ship-wars, het-versus-slash-versus-femmeslash... also another reason why I tend to keep away from fanfiction.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 01:58 am (UTC)(link)I've been battling having dropped out of fandom for a while now. I feel guilty that I don't feel guilty. Fandoms and fanfic weren't giving me what I wanted any more and I've fought and fought against writing original stuff until I can't avoid it any longer.
I love writing, fanfiction doesn't do it for me anymore. So I've decided to follow my impulse and writing original fiction and see where it takes me.
Already, I'm much happier for it.

The day I stopped actively participating in fandom was the day I stopped getting a lot of headaches. It just wasn't that fun anymore. It wasn't because I disagree with some opinions, be it mainstream or not, but the amount of flack for being one part of the fandom or the other just really got me involved in ways that didn't make it a fun hobby. It became more like frequent debating.
Now I just read a lot of independently published stuff and online fiction that because the authors, writers, and artists are so much closer to the fanbase that I feel people are more in harmony there. It sounds very, uhm, "hispter-ish" of me, for lack of a better word, but because there's few of us and because we generally just like the stories and characters for what they are, I feel we mesh well that way.
I'm not going to say that I'll never ever read fanfiction. There's a couple of established, big name series now that I've gotten into which has a big enough fandom for a decent amount of fanfiction to be written. But the appeal's brief, and I quickly retreat back into my corners of the internet.
Here's to us lone wolves.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 03:38 am (UTC)(link)I still like to read fanfiction as well but I'm simply not as invested in fandoms as I used to be. I found that I'm a lot calmer now. I don't get all upset about shit any more.

Slash and het are both very, very popular. Slash maybe a little more so but not NEARLY enough to overwhelm the het. Femmeslash is less popular, but still easy to find.

Het is a bit of a rare animal in my current fandom, SPN, but I attribute that to the fact that the series really has only two stable characters, both of whom are hot males. There's also the semi-regular third guy who has given shippers who don't like incest an option that isn't RPF. There's also issues that the show has never been great at portraying women - at least women who are romantic options (the women in non-romantic roles tend to be kick-ass gals). Suffice to say, it's a fandom that you should expect to be 90% slash.
Meanwhile, Harry Potter. Yes, it has it's fair share opf slash, but go into the right areas, and the right pairings, the het is still going strong. (I read Harry/Hermione. Also, I get the impression Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione are going as strong as ever too.)
Still, back when I first got into HP (between the release of GoF and OotP), I resided down the slash end of the fandom, and if it wasn't for poking about some of the big fandom archives a bit and hearing about the big ship wars, I probably wouldn't have seen anything from the het end of the fandom.
So I'd say that if you really think het doesn't exist, then it's an issue of what fandom, and where in it you are residing.
