I dunno. I suppose some of the longer hair designs that involve lots of styling might read more "male gay" - but I don't know of any that are as uniformly sported as the Lesbian Pixie Cut look.

IDK if it's what visp meant, but some haircuts tend to be more feminizing than others, which is kind of an awkward obstacle for transmen trying to present in public. Hudson's FTM Guide advises against shaving your head or getting too close a buzz cut, for instance, because even though it's short, it can be feminizing and parse to people as Butch Lesbian rather than Male. That these kind of hairstyles can have the same result for a cisman as well as a transman isn't surprising at all.

Actually, I've noticed that Transmen tend to use a somewhat different variation. Less bangs.

I am never going to understand how a haircut can be a clear declaration of both gender and sexual orientation.

Because apparently a shit-ton of lesbians went out and got the same haircut. Seriously, I'll be in some predominately GBLT places, sometimes, and be like "Do you guys really all use the same stylist?"

Actually, I got my hair cut really short a little while ago, and very nearly flat out said to the stylist, "Can you just give me a lesbian haircut?"

The only thing that stopped me was that my mom was right there and she's not nearly as comfortable with me being gay as I am.

Well, having some clear identifiers does make hitting on people less prone to awkward guessing. (Less, because nothing will ever fully take away the awkward 'Do you like me? Check Yes or No.' game that is flirting.)
