I am never going to understand how a haircut can be a clear declaration of both gender and sexual orientation.

Because apparently a shit-ton of lesbians went out and got the same haircut. Seriously, I'll be in some predominately GBLT places, sometimes, and be like "Do you guys really all use the same stylist?"

Actually, I got my hair cut really short a little while ago, and very nearly flat out said to the stylist, "Can you just give me a lesbian haircut?"

The only thing that stopped me was that my mom was right there and she's not nearly as comfortable with me being gay as I am.

Well, having some clear identifiers does make hitting on people less prone to awkward guessing. (Less, because nothing will ever fully take away the awkward 'Do you like me? Check Yes or No.' game that is flirting.)
