40% are female and that number is rising.

I'm not saying I agree with the OP completely but it would be a good idea for developers to diversify their PCs a bit. In the very least, it wouldn't hurt.

na

But aren't those females mainly casual (as in Facebook games and maybe Sims level casual) gamers? I don't know, I play basically anything and I also have one or two female friends who do the same (and interestingly, none of us really care about the representation of females in gaming), but most of my female acquaintances who play casual stuff wouldn't touch the more ~serious~ games, not because they feel objectified/oppressed/ignored by the gaming world, but because they find video games stupid, too time consuming and confusing.

Even if they are this kind of thinking can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. You don't make many female heroes because you think there isn't a market but because there aren't many female heroes there are people who abandon or never get into gaming and therefore there isn't a market.

Furthermore, I think that casual gaming can act like a stepping stone for people to get more interested in the entire genre. I base this idea completely upon watching some friends of friends so take it with a grain of salt.

You see, your situation is the complete opposite of mine. Almost every single one of my female friends is a gamer and most of them loathe casual games. The ones who like both are definitely in the minority and I don't know any who are only into casual games.

On top of that, we're excluding the idea that men wouldn't mind or might even prefer playing as a female.

I just don't think it's so cut and dry. Besides, as I said before, what could it hurt? Are we really causing a horrible thing to happen if we up the diversity?

I'm a man and I prefer playing female characters, even in non-graphical games like roguelikes, so I'm pretty sure there aren't many ulterior motives.

Oh, and DA

See, I knew you guys existed.

I prefer it too! All my fuckos in selectable-gender games (except Classic!Fallout for canonicity reasons) tend to be female.

Cool! Do you ever get people asking you why you prefer to play females? I always think that question is weird. No one ever asks me why I have male versions.

[personal profile] dethtoll 2012-12-11 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
No, actually! Well, maybe once, but the guy who was asking me was kind of a knob so it doesn't count.

Oh wow, you're lucky! I kept hearing dudes complain about their dude friends asking why they would play Femshep and such.

Ahaha, but aren't those the only kind of people who ask that question?

[personal profile] dethtoll 2012-12-11 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think part of it lies in the fact that my friends are about 10:1 female:male ratio, and most of the dudes I'm actually friends with don't make a big deal about it.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-12-11 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I've heard females ask the question too. Though I'll admit, far less than dudes.

Well, either way, it sounds like you have great friends since none of them seem to care.

Yeah, my friends're awesome :)

Though my answer to why I play FemShep lies mostly in two reasons: Marc Meer and Jennifer Hale.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-12-11 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, I play both but I can understand having a preference when it comes to voice actors.

For me it's the additional factor of I exclusively play her as blonde because in my headcanon she's the ME-verse version of Samus Aran :)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-12-11 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, sweet. Do you have a whole headcanon about alternate realities then?
dethtoll: (Default)

[personal profile] dethtoll 2012-12-11 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. Just something I like to think about. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I tell them that I prefer the view. I mean, if I'm going to have my camera angle over the shoulder, my own avatar/character is what I'm looking at quite a lot of the time.

I...just like the view!

explaining that way, with the subtle rub that they must like the view of a male avatar if they insist on playing it a lot of the time is enough to give me smiles for many hours afterward as they try to prove how macho they REALLY are.

dude, just relax, I tell them. We all have our different reasons and none are unreasonable. Just go with it.

*is a male gamer*

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
My brother doesn't mind playing as female. In games where he can choose the gender, his playthrough are generally about 50/50 male/female. I won't believe for a second it's something incredibly rare.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-12-11 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, he sounds like a male version of me.

But yeah, I agree with you. The thought that "A man won't be able to connect with a woman but a woman can connect with a man or a woman" is total bull. I think it has more to do with "A person won't connect with a poorly written character. Period."

I mean, yes, there may be a few dudes out there who can't connect with women for some reason but, my gosh, they can't possibly be the majority.

I'm a person who pretty much jumped ship. It's been 2 years and the only game I have bought in that time was Mass Effect 1 and 2 (Still...still saving up for ME3)

I don't know any other gamers tho.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2012-12-11 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to admit I'm in the middle of jumping ship myself. I still keep an ear out for good games coming out but I'm mostly living off old games I already have.
