Bieber appeals to young teen and preteen girls. Therefore, it's almost socially mandatory that he be derided and that liking him be regarded as something shameful.

Twilight
Mary Sue fanfiction

God forbid we allow young girls to be vocally excited about things or to celebrate them experimenting with their own popular culture. No - we must ostracise that shit.

..um isn't Mary Sue fanfiction hated because its bad writing and annoying. Besides boys can write 'boyish' Mary Sues. Like Manly man stus or Mary Sue hunter type characters or those who come in to a fic for something they hate and just shoot everybody while insulting them

(that's to say I'm not the type who agrees with flaming and so called critics ripping teenagers to shreds because 'be honest' has to mean 'say every asshole thing that's on my mind because any semblance of basic civility is sugar coating' but there's a reason they're annoying other than the fact that teenage girls write them )

NAYRT

True enough. However even if you consider that the Mary Sue term has gotten way out of hand, as a general rule the female characters get away with a lot less than male characters.

No no, it's only okay to celebrate the super girly things if the men are also interested.

pic relevant?

Because Twilight is exactly the type of influence preteen girls need!

Maybe we actually want quality media for our girls, instead stupid trash that teaches them having sex is evil and pedophilia is ~true wuv~.

This comment confused me for a minute until I remembered imprinting... I think my brain keeps trying to hide my memories of it. But it makes me uncomfortable for so many reasons. The more I think of it, the more disturbing it is.

I'm not saying there aren't plenty of valid reasons to criticise Twilight. There are. But a huge amount of the negative press it gets isn't "This is the shit young girls are stuck with?", it's been "Stupid girly crap is so crap and I can't believe stupid girls like this crap!"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and it doesn't help much that the questionable, shitty, and problematic stuff marketed to adolescent boys is a lot more likely to get a pass.

Yeah, Twilight is problematic as hell, but most of the hate for it that I see is less "it's poorly-written and depicts an extremely unhealthy and emotionally abusive relationship and strict adherence to gender roles as the ultimate romantic ideal" and more "it's stupid girly crap SPARKLY VAMPIRES SHIRTLESS WEREWOLVES."

AYRT

Maybe it's just the spaces where I hang out but 90% of the Twilight ranting I hear is about how harmful it is to young impressionable girls. Most of the criticism I hear are about Edward's abusive behavior and stalking, imprinting grossness, Sam and Emily's relationship (also abusive), and stuff like that.

"Stupid girly crap is so crap and I can't believe stupid girls like this crap!"

Also, LOL! People actually say stuff like about Twilight? Like adult people? That sounds so juvenile, I literally I would expect to hear something like that out of an 8 year old that thinks girls have cooties.

Exactly this.
