At first I was like "no shit, why is this even a secret"... and then I read the comments.

In all seriousness, though, it's not even that you always play a dude. It's that you always play the same dark-haired 30-something white guy. Hell, at this point, I'd take a dark-haired 30-something latino or even a white ginger just for the sake of some fucking variety. The outcry over the new Bioshock's box art is heartening in this respect, honestly. It's good to see that a lot of male gamers are getting fucking sick of this shit, too.

There was an outcry over the new Bioshock box art? Damn it, why didn't my gaming news site tell me?

Thanks for letting me know.

It may be the flu, but I still don't get it lol

Actually, the outcry about the box art is hilarious because of how badly it misses the point. They should be mad that the protagonist is generic, but instead they're mad that the protagonist is ON THE BOX. If he wasn't on the box, it'd be all peaches an' cream to them.

idk i mean i like him but i don't have to stare at him when i'm playing as him. and most of the outcry seemed to be because the box art didn't include all the ~wonders infinite is introducing to us, like you implied.

and i mean it is weird. in the first bioshock, the box art was just a big daddy. big daddies are integral to not just the game but the actual bioshock universe as a whole, so it was fitting. bioshock 2, it was the protag, but the protag was interesting (i thought jack was interesting too, don't get me wrong, but i liked that he wasn't on the box for bioshock 1). further, the protag's design was also integral to the story. your existence as a big daddy plays a huge role.

but because the protag here seems so plain, and his design unimportant to the story, it doesn't seem fitting to have him there when this addition to the franchise has changed everything. we're in the sky. the plot and the characters have all changed completely. it's ridiculous.

and while i like him well enough at face value, i do see why some folks, though not the majority, would be upset at how generic the protag is, rather than him merely being on the box art. to be honest though i think most people don't care he's generic at all.

oh man i agree. if every main character is gonna be male, can't there at least be variety!

If they want to take a small step forward, make him a 30 something gay guy.

Baby steps...

No way, you know how much the dudebros would flip if the character they were controlling hit on a man? Christ, Mass Effect and Dragon Age both got a bunch of people angry because a dude hit on them.

I personally don't like interchangeable/blank slate characters and prefer a set, fully realised person, but I do think that person is way too often white and male (and typically American). I love Bioshock 1 and 2 and don't mind that there aren't options, but maybe they could have made the Bioshock Infinite main character female, then?
