Re: Ugliest language?

I know a lot of people like it, but there is something about Italian that just drives me up the wall.

The lisp-thingy in many Spanish dialects also tends to be something that gets on my nerves (I kind of want to learn Spanish because it would be useful, but everytime I listen to one of the learning CDs... no thanks).

The lisp is mostly common in castellan Spanish (spoken in Spain). If you get learning materials from South-American Spanish speaking countries, there's a good chance the lisp will be much less pronounced/absent. So don't let it stop you from learning Spanish, it's a great language! (Personally, I love the lisp ;) )

Yeah, it was okay when I briefly had a teacher from South-America, but most learning materials here in Europe focus on castellan Spanish, so I made the mistake of buying those. I probably ought to give it another try with South-American material.

Huh, I'm also in Europe and I still had the opposite problem! I want to learn castellan Spanish, but when I started learning a lot of the material I found (especially online) was of South-American origin. I found my books and podcasts eventually though. But definitely look at podcasts and such if you're interested, a lot of them seem to have South-American accents.

Huh. I guess there are differences from country to country, then.

I will definitely give podcasts a try, thanks!

I live in California so there's a lot of Spanish speakers, but most of them are Hispanic/Chicano. So most of the students in my high school took Spanish and a good number of them were native/familial speakers. All of our Spanish teachers were also speakers of Latin American Spanish... except for one Castilian woman. Her accent/dialect was very jarring for many of the students! I believe most Latin American dialects of Spanish are derived from Andalusian Spanish, so there's very little lisp. (And if there was when it was introduced in colonial days, it's pretty much gone by now.)
