Ugliest language?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-11 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I think there was a thread about the best-sounding languages a while ago. So what do you all think are the WORST sounding languages?

Norwegian! Oh and Danish, Danish might actually be worse...

Of course Norwegian, it's spoken by soulless crazy people who make a lot of noise in hotels...

That dialect of English from the Southern part of the United States (Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, Georgia, etc.) which I both can't understand (I'm awful with accents) and which sounds as though the speaker can't figure out where their vowels are supposed to end.

Also, Yiddish because it has that throat-clearing sound that just crawls up my spinal cord and sits at the base of my skull. Although that might not be Yiddish. Whichever language it is, then. Or, frankly, just that sound.

Sounds like you hate uvular fricatives! (Voiceless or voiced—Yiddish has both.)

I used to feel that way a long time ago, but then I read Narziss und Goldmund by Hesse and it changed my mind forever.

I don't think there is one.

I think it's more about how people use their language/dialect. For example, I once was watching news from China in Mandarin. The female newscaster was horrible. She made the language sound very sharp and screechy. But then, I was just listening to some music in Mandarin and it was so very beautiful.

So it's less about the language/dialect and more about how a person uses it.

I know a lot of people like it, but there is something about Italian that just drives me up the wall.

The lisp-thingy in many Spanish dialects also tends to be something that gets on my nerves (I kind of want to learn Spanish because it would be useful, but everytime I listen to one of the learning CDs... no thanks).

I'm not a fan of Cantonese myself. I don't speak either but in high school I could sometimes identify it as "like Mandarin, but harsher/angrier". This could be totally wrong though. From my vague understanding there's such a variety of dialects spanning them it could be misguided to generalise, and maybe I've just heard some particularly lovely Mandarin speakers.

I'm going to say my mother-tongue. Tagalog.

It's like Malaysian, Indonesian, or Thai peppered with generous amounts of Spanish and dashed with a bit of American English.

I really dislike listening to both French and Portuguese, I think because they're both Romance languages that seem like they should be close enough to Spanish (which I speak) to be understood, but they're not, and it frustrates me. I don't have that problem with Italian, though.

Slightly OT, but I can't stand several dialects of my own language, especially those that are furthest away from my own. I guess it's mostly annoyance at not or barely understanding something in my own language, which is kind of humiliating.

I don't have that problem in my non-native languages like English. There are accents I like more than others, but even if I pretty much can't understand anything in a certain accent, I mostly find that amusing.

Sorry guys, but American accents and British accents. I can understand of course, but it sounds ~wrong~! The innotations and way things are said are too different :[

Meanwhile, different languages I don't understand sound cool ;)
