I'm not a fan of Cantonese myself. I don't speak either but in high school I could sometimes identify it as "like Mandarin, but harsher/angrier". This could be totally wrong though. From my vague understanding there's such a variety of dialects spanning them it could be misguided to generalise, and maybe I've just heard some particularly lovely Mandarin speakers.

I can identify Mandarin because I learned a bit and I can speak it in.. very, very smalltalk conversations. For Cantonese I only know numbers, but it definitely sounds a lot harder and angrier whereas Mandarin is generally more proper and polite sounding, so your description is about right. (I'm not familiar with other dialects myself, just those two.)
