When I was in college, I briefly dabbled in libertarianism and was a registered Republican. My mother, who describes herself as a Marxist, did not take this well. One day, out of the blue, she calls me and proceeds to go on a rant about how Republicans are evil, how she was going to disown me, and how I should go join the military and get killed in Iraq. This was just the worst incident; she has a general pattern of having these meltdowns where she says incredibly hurtful things, and then pretending that nothing happened. And she wonders why we don't talk/see each other more often.
