Because I'm bored and avoiding writing a play that's due tomorrow I'm going to completely go off in a different direction. I want to talk about these guys using guns in battle against villains. Now, I noticed they tend not to in fic.

It's probably because Tony doesn't make weapons for anyone anymore except himself. And before anyone says, "No, he doesn't make weapons at all." I will ask you to please explain how is his suit isn't a weapon. Anyway, since he only makes weapons for himself he doesn't make guns, he just upgrades his suit. Why shoot a gun when you can shoot missiles out of your shoulders?

Steve, on the other hand, does use guns but he's a bit mixed up. For one, his comic version has gone back and forth on the "never used a gun/use a gun when I need to" thing. This is because of the mentality that guns are bad, which is an understandable way of thinking considering how guns are used. This is especially true in comics because guns can be so very fatal and, really, who actually wants the villain to die? Throw them into another dimension, beat them to a pulp, have them eaten by Cthulu, but don't shoot them with a gun because we for some reason perceive that as more lethal. Now, for the movies I do remember him using a gun in his movie but not during Avengers. I'm assuming it's because nobody thought to give the soldier a gun... for some reason. Apparently his shield is the only thing he needs.

So... in fic I think it depends on the situation. If Tony is in danger but has his suit I don't see him picking up a gun because it's superfluous. If he is separated from his suit then I can see him picking up a gun. I mean, Tony isn't Batman. He doesn't have an aversion to guns. He also lacks the physical strength and fighting prowess of Batman so using a gun is his best bet.

Now Steve, I see using a gun if someone gives one to him or allows him to use it. If SHIELD didn't allow him to use one for, say, publicity reasons I think he would make due. But then, I think that's a pretty flimsy excuse. I think Steve's thought would be, "Is a gun effective against whoever/whatever I'm fighting? If yes, use gun. If no, don't use gun." He's a soldier. He's not going to be squeamish about using guns.

And now my completely unsolicited opinion on the topic you didn't ask about is over.

Huh... I thought that was the first movie. I wonder why I thought that. Huuuuuuhhh. I so don't remember him picking up a gun. Why didn't he keep that gun for the final fight?! Also, was that from SHIELD or the enemy?

The whole "Cap never used a gun even in WWII" idea in the comics (which has thankfully never really caught on) is such idiocy and is a total misunderstanding of the whole reason superheroes tend not to use guns. They tend not to use guns because they have less-lethal alternatives and they're mostly vigilantes and therefore killing criminals is not such a good idea for them to do. Catch supervillains because the cops can't? Hold supervillains because the jails can't? Yes, but killing them is too much like forgoing the trial and skipping to execution.

This does not apply when you're a soldier fighting Nazis in World War II. At all.

In fact, if you're a soldier in World War II fighting Nazis and you don't use a gun to kill them, I automatically respect you less.

Yeah, I have to agree with you. Not killing people is kind of what sets them apart from the villains. ON the other hand, if they're fighting a huge non-sapient robot and a gun works against it I can see Steve pull out a gun.

And pretty much straight agree with the WW2 thing. On top of all that, it was kill or be killed and I think Steve cared more about keeping himself and his men alive than mass murderers.

As for Steve, he actually does use a gun in The Avengers: the picture in the secret is from the Helicarrier scene, where he's using it to hold off...people...while Tony fixes the thing.

I think the problem in fic is two fold:

1) People don't write a lot of the equivalent of "case-fic", with the team (or even a couple of individuals) going out and Fighting Evil in detail; it's usually just a line or two of "Oh and yeah they fought that thing, then went home to lick their wounds (and each other)". How they did the fighting is kind of glossed over so you can't even be sure if they used a gun or not. And when weapons are directly mentioned, it's usually Clint or Natasha taking someone out, because that's what their function was in The Avengers, so.

2) Most people don't know much about guns. So, they just don't write them in.

True. I was just mostly talking about fic where they actually go into battle and the author is making it clear that the team is killing the enemy. Hawkeye is sniping the enemy, Iron Man is blasting them, and so on and so forth and Captain America apparently just bludgeoning the enemy with his shield. It's weird. (Note. When I say enemy it's usually non-sapient or something.)

*snort* I've read that fic. But the "high-tech prosthesis" line is actually what Tony calls it in that Senate hearing back in IM2, when he's asked if he considers the suit a weapon.

Yeaaah, I think Captain America also kind of punches people and seems to be the strategist (as per the battle scene of The Avengers), so you can't really fault fic writers for sticking with the formula canon set. On the other hand, thinking about it, did he go up against Loki in Germany with just his shield and hope? Man, that's questionable. I mean it's pretty obvious bullets wouldn't work on Loki (they didn't before), but still, give the man something to work with beyond a glorified boomerang.

True. I think that's what bothers me the most. Not that he uses or doesn't use a gun. I actually don't like guns. It's that he only uses his shield. Don't get me wrong. It's a freaking sweet shield. I just... I expect something more I suppose.

Here's the thing - in WWII, Steve was using guns. The first time he went into the battle intentionally and raids a Hydra base, he has the shield in one hand and a gun in the other. And that picture of Tony came from a deleted scene in which the envoy is attacked - his first reaction when he stumbles out of the jeep is to pick up the gun and start shooting in the direction the attack is coming from.

I can see why Tony would no longer use guns - after all, the weapons on his suit are far better than guns and don't run out of ammo - but Steve not getting guns seems...ridiculous. I can see him going up against Loki without a gun since they already know guns don't work on Loki, but if Nat was able to get a gun and Clint the arrows when they decided to run off and deal with Loki and the Chitauri, why the hell couldn't Steve get a gun then?

Which... is why I'm fine with him using guns. And he does use gun in WW2 and during a small point in the Avengers. I can see Tony using guns if he couldn't get to his suit for some reason... I have no problem with this?

I'm not? I'm just agreeing with you and adding more to the point you've already made. We've seen them use guns, so it's really not OOC, and depending on circumstances we should at least see Steve using guns more. (Tony not using guns makes sense).

Also, Tony's suit is much sexier than any ol' gun, so he really doesn't need a gun. While Steve's shield is awesome, it's not sexy, ergo he really needs a gun, STAT. :P

I'm in finals week, too, and I and my friends in RL are constantly apologizing to each other this week for being in crabby moods with each other after low sleep, high stress, and frustrating schools and teachers. It may be that under normal circumstances I would have looked back on what I wrote and thought "wow, that sounds mean" and edited it, and just didn't do the same right now because I've been averaging about four hours of sleep a night for the last several days and am extremely caught up in cowering in fear of all the studying I still have left to do.

LOL. And this is half of the reason I hate Batman. This whole mentality... I get where he comes from, but really: people like the Joker should've been killed long ago.

And then you have Steve, who is as good person as anybody can, and at the same time, so more practical about this issue. No wonder why I love him <3

BTW, Tony is like the oppositte of Batman. I've read somewhere that we're all Batmans or Iron Mans (we live desesperatly hidding who we're or we're blatantly open about it), and I really like the idea.

I like Batman but I can rip something I like a new one if I think it needs it. But as someone mentioned above, the no-guns mentality comes from thinking that by being a vigilanty and appointing oneself hudge, jury, and exocutioner, you're becoming like the very villians you fight against. Superheroes who kill their villians are normally anti-heros at best. Though, I'm honestly surprised the people of Gotham haven't given Joker the death penalty. Unless, I suppose, such a thing doesn't exist on their books? I thought it did...

Yeah, as I've said, I get where Batman and other superheroes come from ("I don't want to be like them" and all that), but when they still think like that in extreme situations... I just don't buy it. Joker is the best example for this: I don't support death penalty AT ALL, but it comes a moment in which this becomes unbelievable. I mean: Barbara Gordon, Jason Todd, all the anonymous people Batman only cares about in an essential level... With all the pain he has inflicted, I feel like it's somehow WRONG he's still alive.

(I must admit I have some double standards about this: I rarely bitch about this mentality in Superman, but I think it's because Batman is supposed to be the "dark" hero and Superman is the "naïve" one. Besides, Superman's villains, IMHO, aren't as shitty as the Gotham ones. I love her, but Gotham is the worst city in the entire world. Why does she have so many citizens?)
If someone would've told me someday I would love Captain America as much as I do now... I don't hate him in the (few) comics I've read, but I don't like him that much.
