This doesn't seem like a secret.

That's probably because it isn't. But then, we have a lot of "secrets" like this that are put up all the time so... whatever. We may get some wank out of this if people take it into gun laws territory.

I don't get fetishes like this. How does something a person is holding doesn't make them more or less sexy? It's not part of them, just a weapon they are using.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
So? All clothes fetishes of the world, lingerie, boots, high heels, leather, uniforms, suits etc., are also "just things people are wearing" and not parts of them. What a weird reason.

IA, but fandom is far more interested in seeing grown men weeping in their bedrooms over minor miscommunications and cuddling on the couch in their sweatpants stroking each other's hair and watching Disney movies than being badasses, unless the badassness involves murdering rapists without a trial or threatening to destroy the credit scores and careers of people who mildly annoy them.

Also, gunkink is hard to portray in the written medium of fic.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
...So...basically 'Unless they make Captain America into Americop' [At least as far as murdering without a trial goes]? 'Cause, iirc, Captain was actually pretty disturbed by Americop the like...one time they worked together.

/totally misses the point

But yeah, gunkink is pretty hard to portray unless you do it in a specific completely porny way that's probably closer to knife play than it is what the OP is talking about.

Probably because Tony's seemingly got issues with the whole weapons dealer/user thing, and because it would interfere with fandom's "darling innocent waif" narrative w/r/t Steve.

IDK, OP, check in with the Clint/Coulson side of fandom, I've read a lot more "looking good with guns/bows" fics there. Even Bucky gets more play for that aspect than either Tony or Steve (which certainly makes sense given he's a sniper).

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, here, but I get the impression they're upset specifically about the lack of gunkink with Steve and Tony.

IDEK about darling innocent waif narrative with Steve Rogers. Any idiot with half an idea of what went on in that war could immolate the idea that he could actually be ignorant of humanity's capacity for immoral behavior. Our grandfathers? Were pretty much not actually sheltered innocents, they just expressed themselves (much) less blatantly than putting duck faces on Facebook. Post-fact evidence #1: there's a damn good reason that books set in the 1950's involving adults feature booze every other page...

If anything, Rogers just...seems to be a nice guy that can lay the smack down. That doesn't have to be synonymous with waify innocence.

...If you want more gun kink post a prompt on the kink meme? It's... not that hard.

Because I'm bored and avoiding writing a play that's due tomorrow I'm going to completely go off in a different direction. I want to talk about these guys using guns in battle against villains. Now, I noticed they tend not to in fic.

It's probably because Tony doesn't make weapons for anyone anymore except himself. And before anyone says, "No, he doesn't make weapons at all." I will ask you to please explain how is his suit isn't a weapon. Anyway, since he only makes weapons for himself he doesn't make guns, he just upgrades his suit. Why shoot a gun when you can shoot missiles out of your shoulders?

Steve, on the other hand, does use guns but he's a bit mixed up. For one, his comic version has gone back and forth on the "never used a gun/use a gun when I need to" thing. This is because of the mentality that guns are bad, which is an understandable way of thinking considering how guns are used. This is especially true in comics because guns can be so very fatal and, really, who actually wants the villain to die? Throw them into another dimension, beat them to a pulp, have them eaten by Cthulu, but don't shoot them with a gun because we for some reason perceive that as more lethal. Now, for the movies I do remember him using a gun in his movie but not during Avengers. I'm assuming it's because nobody thought to give the soldier a gun... for some reason. Apparently his shield is the only thing he needs.

So... in fic I think it depends on the situation. If Tony is in danger but has his suit I don't see him picking up a gun because it's superfluous. If he is separated from his suit then I can see him picking up a gun. I mean, Tony isn't Batman. He doesn't have an aversion to guns. He also lacks the physical strength and fighting prowess of Batman so using a gun is his best bet.

Now Steve, I see using a gun if someone gives one to him or allows him to use it. If SHIELD didn't allow him to use one for, say, publicity reasons I think he would make due. But then, I think that's a pretty flimsy excuse. I think Steve's thought would be, "Is a gun effective against whoever/whatever I'm fighting? If yes, use gun. If no, don't use gun." He's a soldier. He's not going to be squeamish about using guns.

And now my completely unsolicited opinion on the topic you didn't ask about is over.

...Damn it I still have to write that play.

The whole "Cap never used a gun even in WWII" idea in the comics (which has thankfully never really caught on) is such idiocy and is a total misunderstanding of the whole reason superheroes tend not to use guns. They tend not to use guns because they have less-lethal alternatives and they're mostly vigilantes and therefore killing criminals is not such a good idea for them to do. Catch supervillains because the cops can't? Hold supervillains because the jails can't? Yes, but killing them is too much like forgoing the trial and skipping to execution.

This does not apply when you're a soldier fighting Nazis in World War II. At all.

In fact, if you're a soldier in World War II fighting Nazis and you don't use a gun to kill them, I automatically respect you less.

"No, he doesn't make weapons at all." I will ask you to please explain how is his suit isn't a weapon.

It's a hi-tech prosthesis ;)

As for Steve, he actually does use a gun in The Avengers: the picture in the secret is from the Helicarrier scene, where he's using it to hold off...people...while Tony fixes the thing.

I think the problem in fic is two fold:

1) People don't write a lot of the equivalent of "case-fic", with the team (or even a couple of individuals) going out and Fighting Evil in detail; it's usually just a line or two of "Oh and yeah they fought that thing, then went home to lick their wounds (and each other)". How they did the fighting is kind of glossed over so you can't even be sure if they used a gun or not. And when weapons are directly mentioned, it's usually Clint or Natasha taking someone out, because that's what their function was in The Avengers, so.

2) Most people don't know much about guns. So, they just don't write them in.

"Who actually wants the villain to die? Throw them into another dimension, beat them to a pulp, have them eaten by Cthulu, but don't shoot them with a gun because we for some reason perceive that as more lethal"

LOL. And this is half of the reason I hate Batman. This whole mentality... I get where he comes from, but really: people like the Joker should've been killed long ago.

And then you have Steve, who is as good person as anybody can, and at the same time, so more practical about this issue. No wonder why I love him <3

BTW, Tony is like the oppositte of Batman. I've read somewhere that we're all Batmans or Iron Mans (we live desesperatly hidding who we're or we're blatantly open about it), and I really like the idea.

(Sorry for not talking about the secret issue, OP, but seriously, IDGAF).

Uh, maybe because both of them do most all their fighting without guns? Captain America hits people with a shield and Stark just uses his Iron Man weapons. I've got nothing against gunkink, but it seems that you're doing the equivalent of whining about there not being enough porn of Black Widow as a brunette.

If we're talking about Steve during that scene in Avengers, he kind of looked like he was about to cry the entire time for some weird reason. It was sort of endearing, but not what I'd call sexy.

In any case, I don't see guns as the primary weapon of either of them. Steve's weapon is a shield and it's one of my favorite things about him, that his weapon is basically an offensive piece. And Tony, as we know, has issues with weapons.

One of the things I love about Steve is that he's willing to use a gun if he comes across one and it's useful. Not for gun!kink reasons, but for character reasons.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Come over to DC fandom, baby. I've got just the man for you.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
idk about anyone else, but for me the reason is: guns are for one purpose and one purpose only. To kill people. I know it's fiction, but the idea of killing people does not turn me on.

But if you want gun kink, just go post it to the kinkmeme. No one's going to judge you for it, and if they do they will rightfully get shot down. (no pun intended, heh)

[personal profile] ariakas 2012-12-12 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Because people with gun kinks usually don't bother with comic fandoms (where super heroes rarely use them) when they have a plethora military genre fandoms where it's nothing but weapons systems and hardware, as far as the eye can see, as much as you'd ever, ever want.

I'm not particularly bothered about Steve or Tony, but I think most fandoms could do with a healthy injection of gunkink, for real.

And those are some sexy pictures you got in that secret there, holy shit *_*

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
Less that guns are boring to comics fans, but that in a large case of characters the very act of wielding one is antithetical to them as a character. Obviously this isn't always the case (The Punisher immediately springs to mind), but it's something to keep in mind.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering the amount of gunporn I see in fandoms, I'm surprised that the Avengers fandom doesn't have much ... maybe you're not looking hard enough, anon?
