Re: OT question about mainstream erotica

For romance novels, not really on the variety thing, and I've never found them all that explicit. Most cater to gender roles so hard that...uh, basically, they have really, really intense gender role reinforcement in them. It's fucking creepy.

But there's romance novels, and then there's erotica. A lot of erotica is actually significantly more explicit than most fanfic--look for the stuff written by anonymous in the bookstore, with black covers, usually. I'm never really sure where people are getting this impression that smut doesn't get published. There's even kinky smut! It's all at your neighborhood bookstore.

Yeah, I prefer fanfiction because that's the only place I can find heterosexual romance that doesn't do that. And pretty much the only place I can find heterosexual erotica without male dominance themes.

Dude, your neighbourhood bookstore sounds awesome and win. Is it a Chapters Indigo? I've never seen an erotica section there.

Yeah, actually. I can't remember what they call the section, but it's been in every Chapters I've been in. Usually on the far end of romance or literature.

I doubt this simply because of the types of kinks that are employed in fanfic that would be considered illegal or too offensive to publish.

Yeah I can't imagine there being much knotting or young teen/adult(among so many, many others) erotica out there.

"Explicit" doesn't mean "about weirder shit".

It not representing obscure kinks doesn't make it soft-core. It exists, and it's porny--more so than a lot of explicit fic, and it's in book stores. That is the extent of my point.
