I find that mildly revolting.

Not forced on other people. But by the parents' choice. And yeah, it's an unpopular opinion. I have a hard time having a problem with abortion.

I think think having an abortion because you think something is ~wrong~ with your child is really gross. Which is in and of itself an unpopular opinion in some circles...

If I have a child with genetic defects, I'll abort the child. I know life will be very difficult for the child and I very likely won't be there to take care of him or her or advocate for his or her care when I'm old or dead. I love my children and as a parent, my children are my responsibility, not the responsibility of my relatives or my other children or the society. I choose to abort and not bring such a child into the world because I can't guarantee the care of my child and I don't want him or her to suffer.

You are sick.

I'm sick because I care about my child's well-being? Interesting.

If you think a kid is better off dead than disabled, and better off dead than a "burden to society"? Yeah, you're sick.

Not really, it isn't. I can have an abortion any time I want, for any reason I want. That's bodily autonomy for you.

Your body is not the only one involved. That is why it isn't simple.

It is according to the law.

I like how when the thing you agree with happens to be law, you use the law to argue your point. Should we just follow every law that's every been passed ever, or should we maybe consider the situation from a perspective of right and wrong and *then* apply law based on that conclusion? And from there, maybe work to change laws we don't agree with?

My point is, "it's the law" isn't really an argument.

Also, I'm not sure whether I'm more amused or annoyed that this conversation is still going on days after this post. That doesn't usually happen.

Nope. Why bring a child into the world that will only suffer? That's even more sick imo.

You think people with genetic defects ONLY suffer and enjoy no part of their lives? Then you're just plain stupid. And thinking someone is better dead than suffering at all? EVERYONE suffers at some point in life. By that logic anyone who gives birth to any baby is sick.

Anyway you pretty much just insulted lots of people I know who gave birth to kids with genetic defects, so... screw you.

Nope. Because I do not include Aspies, Downs, or anyone who has a manageable, livable defect.

A child that has Tay–Sachs or, I can't remember the name, but the disease that ends up them drowning from having so much fluid in their lungs, anything that basically has them completely bed ridden, no way to communicate and interact, THAT is what I'd abort for. Cause I see that as unimaginable suffering on their part. And I'd not have the patience for it.

And guess what? I have a defect. So, screw your fucking self.

Regardless, screw you anyway for calling other people sick for not aborting in those cases.

Honestly? I think this response is a real cop-out. There is NO WAY you can guarantee that life won't be difficult for your children. You don't know what they're going to go through even if they're perfectly healthy, genetically speaking. And deciding for someone that their life will be too difficult for them to want to live it is really wrong imo.

It's a sign of weakness and selfishness on the part of the parent if he or she can't bear to raise a child with "genetic defects," not a sign of responsibility and love. Behind the statement "I don't want him or her to suffer" is the sense of "I don't want to suffer through this child."

Different anon, but I think that depends on what sort of "problem" we're talking about here. I personally don't agree with aborting a baby because they have Down's Syndrome, but something like Tay-Sachs, where they'd basically have 0 quality of life and would be in pain and miserable for most of their existence? I would personally think the better choice would be to abort. But those sort of decisions are a very personal thing, and it can also be a very slippery slope when it comes to where people draw the line.

Well I mean yeah if we're talking about a disease that will cause a few months or years of suffering before certain death? That's one thing. But it's completely possible for a person with Down's syndrome to live a long and fulfilling life.

This is what most of us are thinking (i hope anyway). Havinga child with Asperger's? No, never abort. Downs? No. But one where they are forever confined to chair or bed and can't LIVE in any form of the word? Yes, abort. Cause it's too sad.

You do realize most people will abort a fetus with Down Syndrome or other serious genetic problems? It's pretty normal (at least where I am- abortion is covered and is a non-controversial issue). I don't see the issue with aborting if the fetus isn't healthy. The only people I see who do are crazy Republicans like Sarah Palin.

Yes, I do realize that, but that doesn't make it okay. And your perspective isn't very complete if you think the only people who think that isn't okay is Palin-types.
