Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!
(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 04:39 am (UTC)(link)I don't think I'm sheltered person, I'm pretty well-traveled, I think. I have been to every continent at least twice. I lived in rural and urban areas, overall I feel I've experienced a lot for someone my age.
The funny thing is, IRL, which is supposed to be a evil, wicked place according to most of the people I've met online isn't actually that bad. Don't get me wrong, there are jerks everywhere, but jerks were almost always despised by the community they lived in. People on the whole have been nice and helpful; whether I've been in Europe, Asia, Africa or the Americas complete strangers have helped me and asked for nothing. Opened me their homes and treated me as their own.
But online, most I encounter are just so mean and nasty- too complete strangers. The foulest things I've seen said to a person have been online. And some of the people online who I see are popular, in my experience, their shitty behavior wouldn't have been tolerated in the real world.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 04:54 am (UTC)(link)Although it's also possible that my standards for "kind behavior" are a lot lower online than IRL, because I've said before that I find fandomsecrets a fairly low-key, positive, non-aggressive community, which apparently is not the general opinion.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 05:16 am (UTC)(link)True, for sure. The thing that really shaped the way I see people was through travel. People being nice to you at home in your own country, that's one thing; but the kindness I've see from complete stranger to me, a foreigner, in all these different countries and cultures, it made me feel like people really are good at heart, and jerks are the minority (a loud minority).
I do agree that FS is one of the better communities online. Most of the regulars here take a silly, playful approach to things and I think that helps.
